Safaricom accused of hacking a client’s phone, using up his over 8k airtime in seconds

Safaricom CEO Peter Ndegwa

A Twitter user by the name Joseph Muthengi (@Joselonzo) Saturday morning narrated how he lost his Sh8960 airtime and 8GB data bundles without using them.

“Over night, I lost 8,950 airtime, lost almost 8GB data yesterday, my zidisha bundle vanished without calls! I called your Cs,you hanged up on me! I tweeted, I was given a false promise.Who’s using my line?!”, he tweeted tagging Safaricom, their CEO, Consumer Federation of Kenya and Communications Authority

He believes that someone hacked his line and used up his airtime and data bundles.

“I just want to know who has access to my Safaricom line, who’s “making calls” when I am asleep, who’s using my data when I have WiFi at home and at work and cellular data is turned off. Why I can’t view my data usage on my app or website”, he continued.

Safaricom PLC has had a lot of hacking done to its systems over the past few years. It has become rampant such that the Telco recently went on a system revamping spree that raised eyebrows.

Every week, the Telco had a notice up about ‘MPESA services system upgrade’.

Last month, a lady narrated how her dad lost Sh85,000 from his MPESA and had a unkpnw person take a loan of a similar amount on behalf of him on MPESA.

Joseph Muthengi’s case is different and chilling. He shared the below pictures to support his claim.

Sonko-Badi war denying health sector over Sh127 million

The war  between the embattled Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko and Nairobi Metropolitan Services (NMS) Director General Mohammed Badi has stalled the utilisation of Sh127.2 million.

The disputed money was received as a grant from the World Bank and the Danish government after the National Treasury suspended the operating system of the budget sector.

Sonko who appeared before the senate’s health committee said that the condition of the grant was to support  Level 2 and Level 3 hospitals under the Universal HealthCare projects.

The governor had transferred four functions including health to the NMS in line with Article 187 of the Constitution.

Sonko transferred the functions to the National Government through the NMS in March but supremacy wars later erupted between the governor and Badi resulting to hampered service delivery to Nairobi residents.

Treasury CS Ukur Yatani has refused to release the funds to NMS claiming that move lacks a legal backing.

Sonko tabled a letter by the treasury CS which explained that the funds can only be given to Nairobi County Government through the County Revenue Fund.

The CS cited Section 4(2) of County Allocation of Revenue Act, 2020 which stipulates that each county government allocations shall be made to the respective County Revenue Fund.

“The funds are still lying idle in the Central Bank account as a result of suspension of the health sector budget Integrated Financial Management Information System (Ifmis) operating system by the National Treasury whereby it is now impossible for our accounting staff to process any payments for the transferred function through Ifmis,” Sonko told the Senate’s Health committee.

The Senate Health committee was also told that Sh17.6 million conditional grant from the Danish government were received on April 30, 2020.

The funds are still idling in the County Revenue Fund account since the county has been blocked from accessing Ifmis.

“The funds are currently held at the County Revenue Fund Account as it has become practically impossible to utilise them due to Ifmis budget withdrawal thus the county cannot process their disbursements,” Sonko said.

Sonko also added that his administration owes the Kenya Medical Supplies Agency (Kemsa) Sh374.9 million noting that debt was incurred before the health functions were transferred to NMS.

“The health sector has pending bills amounting to Sh1,072,998390 comprising Sh801.9 million being recurrent expenditure and Sh270 million being development expenditure pending bills,” he added.

All Bars and Clubs to Hire COVID-19 Bouncers

The Ministry of Health is set to gazette new regulations that will require all bars to hire Covid-19 liaison bouncers.

According Mutahi Kagwe led ministry, the covid-19 liason bouncers will ensure that drinkers observe protocols set by the State to curb the spread of the coronavirus in the clubs and bars.

Every establishment shall appoint and adequately train a Covid-19 liaison officer. The liaison officer shall be the point of contact with the Ministry of Health, Sub-County Liquor Licensing Committee and other sector players keep abreast of the emerging health, safety, and hygiene information and preventative measures related to Covid-19,” the regulations read in part.

Under regulations that are yet to be gazzetted, the Covid-19 bouncers will restrict the number of revellers allowed into a premise based on the Health ministry guidelines and report any suspected case of Covid-19 infection among staff and drinkers.

The Ministry of Health also states that the liason bouncers will ensure that bar workers observe a yet to be developed Covid-19 code of conduct.

In what is perceived as a raft of stiff regulations for bars, the establishments will be required to close dance floors and reduce contact between staff and drinkers, designate spacious waiting and collection areas for couriers and customers as part of curbing the spread of the coronavirus.

The establishments will also have to display signage to show that they have reached the maximum number of drinkers to meet the social distancing requirements.

Bars will become the first businesses to have a liaison officer following concerns that reckless behaviour by drinkers would fuel the spread of the disease.

Kenya shut down bars on March 25 after reporting the first coronavirus case occasioning an economic meltdown in the industry marked by thousands of job losses and permanent closure of some establishments.

In September, President Uhuru Kenyatta announced an ease of restrictions that included reopening of bars and clubs amongst other institutions that had been closed down indefinitely.

Bars committed to cut sitting capacity by half under social distance rules, have contact free-bill payment, restrict drinking at the counters as the industry turned to self-regulation.

East African Breweries Limited net profit dropped to a six-year low on the State closure of bars to contain Covid-19 spread highlighting the impact of the restrictions on the industry.

The brewer’s net profit dropped 39 per cent to Sh7 billion for the year ended June 2020 with net sales for the second half of the year plunging by 29 per cent.

Kenya is witnessing a spike in daily Covid-19 infections. MoH has confirmed more than 80,000 Covid-19 cases from 47,843 on October 23, reflecting average daily infections of 998 in the last 30 days after the easing of the restrictions.

Tanzania Hit By Heavy Travel Advisory From US Over COVID-19

CAPTION: Tanzanian President John Pombe Magufuli

President John Pombe Magufuli might have emerged the winner in the recent highly contested Tanzanian national polls but from latest reports, it looks like the man equally loved as a reformist and loathed as a hardline dictator by the masses has fallen latest victim to party-poopers; the United States, who have this week issued a very high travel advisory against the East African Nation over their COVID-19 situation.

In the red notice published on the official US Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) website, all American citizens have been asked to avoid ALL TRAVEL to Tanzania, with a warning that doing so could increase one’s chance of contracting and spreading the Coronavirus.

On the page, Tanzania’s COVID-19 level is ranked at 4, which is the highest, up from level 3 just days ago.

CAPTION: A screengrab from the official US Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) website indicating that Tanzania has been red-zoned

What does a red travel advisory from the United States mean?

As the world slowly began to adapt to life under COVID-19, some countries began to open up for international travel.

To help their citizens determine the level of precaution they should take when travelling outside the country, the US set up a new DOS Travel Advisory system where every country is assigned a colour-coded risk rating of one to four, defined as follows…

Level 1 – Exercise Normal Precautions: This is the lowest advisory level for safety and security risk.

Level 2 – Exercise Increased Caution: Be aware of heightened risks to safety and security. The Department of State provides additional advice for travellers in these areas in the Travel Advisory.

Level 3 – Reconsider Travel: Avoid travel due to serious risks to safety and security. The Department of State provides additional advice for travellers in these areas in the Travel Advisory.

Level 4 – Do Not Travel: This is the highest advisory level due to the greater likelihood of life-threatening risks.

Further, citizens are advised that if they are in a Level 4 country, they should try to leave as soon they can.

And if a citizen plans on travelling to a country that is a Level 4 threat, they are required to be granted special clearance or permission.

What does this mean for Magufili and Tanzania?

When the pandemic first broke out in early 2020, one of the main points of discussion around the various responses to COVID-19 was governance.

Different countries reacted to the pandemic in different ways, and these differences were informed by the varying styles of leadership and governance around the globe.

Countries with open and transparent governing styles took a more hands-on approach by engaging diverse stakeholders.

In neighbouring Tanzania, Magufuli took the opposite view.

He framed COVID-19 as a war and not a health calamity requiring scientific consultation.

As a result, the handling of the pandemic was at the whim of the president.

Ever since Magufuli expressed his doubts on the professionalism of the national laboratory, no more updates on COVID-19 were ever made.

Weeks later, unlike other countries which were still suffering from the scourge of the coronavirus pandemic, Magufuli declared Tanzania free from the pandemic.

The announcement paid off handsomely, and as a result, tourists flocked into the country, to a relief of the tourist sector that was already in suffering.

International airlines including KLM Royal Dutch Airlines, Swiss Air and Emirates, Ethiopian Airlines, Qatar Airways, Turkish Airlines which had halted flights in mid-March, all began flying to and from Tanzania.

With a travel advisory like this, numbers of tourists visiting from the United States will certainly significantly drop, and even worse, other foreign nations might be prompted into issuing their own advisories against Tanzania.

This would leave Maguful with a huge job to lure back tourists, who are a key source of foreign exchange, but who will now be difficult to convince that Tanzania is free of Covid.

The development also comes at a time Tanzanian opposition leaders led by Tundu Lissu have called on the international community to impose sanctions against the regime of President John Magufuli.

CAPTION: Former Tanzania presidential candidate Tundu Lissu

Lissu, who fled the country and is currently exiled in Belgium, said the international community needed to take action on Magufuli, top leaders in his government as well as the people that financed his administration to allegedly rig the election.

After Magufuli’s landslide victory, several nations, including the United States, noted credible allegations that call the vote’s results and the country’s democratic ideals into question.

Could this be a first attempt by the West to flex their muscles and torpedo Magufuli’s little economy to smithereens?

If so, one can only wonder what next the bureaucrats could have in store for him, especially now that the pro-NGO Biden administration (a darling of activists) is poised to take over the presidency.

Tenants In William Ruto-Owned Developments Face Dark Days Over KPLC Bills

CAPTION: Muthaiga Square Mall

Tenants of apartments and commercial facilities owned by Signature Developers Kenya Limited have been undergoing severe stress and trauma, as they have become collateral damage in the on-going war between President Uhuru Kenyatta and Deputy President William Ruto.

Signature Developers Limited has long been associated with Deputy President William Ruto and it is suspected that President Uhuru Kenyatta ordered Kenya Power to disconnect the buildings through instructions passed to Energy PS Joseph Njoroge by Jubilee party leader David Murathe.

This is despite an earlier presidential order where Kenya Power was required to halt electricity disconnections due to the Corona pandemic, which has inflicted unending financial constraints on a vast majority of Kenyans.

Signature Developers Limited own massive projects in the country, amongst them NextGen Mall, Muthaiga Square, Thika Gateway Mall, Casa Ozone and Western Heights.

NextGen Mall along Mombasa Road hosts major entertainment establishments like Blend Nairobi.

CAPTION: NextGen Mall along Mombasa Road

Sources say that some senior Kenya Power officials have been tasked with the specific role of daily visits to these properties, to harass tenants and purchasers of units, much to their chagrin because they’re not linked or allied to any political faction in the country.

In the meantime, the Ministry of Trade and Industry headed by Betty Maina, has been spewing empty rhetoric on Kenya’s “competitiveness and ease of doing business” yet something small like political scuffles can influence energy policy in the country.

bety

CAPTION: Industrialisation Cabinet Secretary Betty Maina

Case in point is the alcohol industry where President Uhuru Kenyatta has been harassing and intimidating local investors like Keroche and Humphrey Kariuki-owned Africa Wines & Spirits, but he has been bending over backwards just to provide foreigners Diageo, unfair trade practices.

The country continues on a downward spiral, largely because business people continue becoming the victims of political machinations, while in other developed countries, business is insulated from political meddling.

It is worth noting that Uhuru’s re-election campaign fundraising team was headed by Energy PS Joseph Njoroge, and at the time, they used to hold their meetings at the Windsor Hotel.

CAPTION: Energy PS Joseph Njoroge who has overseen the rise of electricity bills so as to facilitate political campaigns

One cannot fail to draw parallels between this obvious conflict of interest where a public official is fundraising for a political candidate, and the escalating levels of power bills in the country, which have forced close to one million SME’s to close down.

These are businesses like salons, barbershops, DVD stalls, cyber cafe’s, and the like.

John Njoroge’s bid to recover the money he pledged as he was Uhuru’s campaign manager, has come at huge expense to the country, rendering many young people jobless.

Between 2013 and today, electricity costs have shot up almost 400%, all because of Kenya Power’s malfeasance as they lump fictitious fuel adjustment levies.

What Kenya Power is doing is literally extortion, because disconnecting customers based on inflated electricity bills is outright theft, and residents across the country should unite and lynch Kenya Power bosses on sight.

Sonko Flies Out 30 MCAs To Mombasa 48 Hours Before Halted Impeachment

CAPTION: A section of Sonko-allied Members of the Nairobi County Assembly enjoy their favourite drinks moments before causing chaos at City Hall in attempts to evict impeached speaker Beatrice Elachi in September 2018

It was a reprieve for Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko on Tuesday, December 1, 2020, after a court temporarily halted his impeachment.

In the afternoon ruling, Justice Nzioka wa Makau placed a temporary injunction pending the hearing and determination of a suit filed by the county boss to block his outster.

This new development came just a day a after meeting convened by the troubled Governor to strategise against his looming impeachment was violently dispersed, with police lobbing teargas to break up a group of County Assembly members who had convened a press conference after a meeting with their boss, in which they disowned signatures to impeach him.

Now, just under 48 hours to Sonko’s D-day, reports are circulating that the flamboyant city politician as circulating reports now claim that he has today flown out up to 30 Nairobi MCAs down to an undisclosed location in the coastal city of Mombasa in an attempt to ensure they miss the proceedings come Thursday.

Murmurs from within the corridors of power further suggest that Sonko has reportedly asked all members of the contingent to switch off their mobile phones in order to to cut out all means of communication from the capital, as well as avoid being tracked down by their detractors.

Whether or not this latest move will bear any positive fruits is bound to be told by time but it clearly amplifies a fact we the governor has made clear over time; that he is ready to employ all the tricks in his book to remain just to defeat those who want him off the top seat.

Those pushing for his impeachment say it is a result of Sonko failing to approve a Sh37.4 billion budget to help the operations undertaken by the Nairobi Metropolitan Services (NMS).

The Governor is also accused of abuse of office, gross misconduct as well as the lack of physical and mental capability to run county affairs.

The motion to remove Sonko from office was started by Minority Leader Michael Ogada who tabled the notice of impeachment with a list of 86 MCAs he claimed had appended their signatures to allow the process to start.

In an earlier letter to the Nairobi county assembly speaker, Governor Sonko noted that there is a current court order preventing his removal from office.

“By your purporting to process a fresh impeachment motion against Hon. Mike Sonko Mbuvi while these proceedings are pending, you have committed an act of intentional disrespect to these judicial proceedings…which constitutes contempt of court,” the letter read in part.

This is the second attempt by the MCAs to impeach the Governor after the first attempt failed in March after the court suspended the proceedings pending hearing and determination of the matter after the Governor challenged the process in court.

Must Sonko exit the stage for a Kikuyu governor?

$
0
0

Controversies surrounding the troubles faced by Nairobi governor Mike Sonko are meant to topple him from the county’s top job and replace him with a man from Mt. Kenya.

The calculations to achieve this puts the Nairobi County Assembly speaker Benson Mutura at a vantage position to take over from the troubled Sonko who is facing impeachment.

A kikuyu sitting in a prime position as that of the Nairobi governor is will possibly win the support of their community which will exit power in 2022, after two decades.

President Uhuru Kenyatta rooted for Peter Kenneth in 2017 but the popular Sonko proved unbeatable.

Sonko is allied to the deputy president William Ruto but with Peter Kenneth being out of the scene after his dismal performance in 2017, all the schemes aim at planting Mutura as the governor.

This is because the county does not have a deputy governor who would take over if Sonko was impeached but in the on goings schemes, Speaker Mutura is believed to have nominated Peter Kenneth to be his DG deputy who will eventually take over in 2022.

This plot is not achievable in the ballot because Kikuyu candidates don’t attract votes from other communities like a Luo, Luhya or Kamba candidate would.

The former Dagoretti South MP Denis Waweru is also being touted for the top job if Sonko is impeached because he is sycophantic enough, plus he supports the hand shake and the BBI report.

Waweru is BBI’s national coordinator, a role he plays with Raila Odinga’s errand boy, Mohammed Junet.

The scheme will take advantage of the loopholes in the constitution which will allow the acting governor to name a deputy.

And in a scenario where the battle stretches to the ballot, a Kikuyu candidate will win because ODM people will definitely back and cheer him.

PK is not getting enough support with many arguing that he has lost enough clout after losing in the 2013 presidential race and not going beyond party primaries in 2017.

Nairobi County Assembly Speaker Benson Mutura [p/courtesy]

But he still stands a chance if handed the position to succeed Uhuru as Mount Kenya political kingpin.

The president Kenya Chamber of Commerce and Industry Richard Ngatia is also having his name infiltrating into Nairobi politcs after Sonko declared war on Ngatia him.

Sonko believes that Ngatia is one of the guys the ‘deep state’ has lined up to succeed him and Ngatia owes it to his network within the county.

MCAs had last week tabled an impeachment motion accusing the governor of corruption and ineptitude

But Sonko has since received a court stopped stopped the impeachment proceedings against him until his case is heard and determined.

The motion tabled by Minority leader Michael Ogada had 86 out of 122 MCAs append their signatures in support of the process to exit Sonko.

Speaker Mutura stands the chance to take over from Sonko who has not appointed his deputy since Polycarp Igathe resigned in January 2018.

The law requires that if both the governor’s and the deputy’s offices are vacant, the speaker acts as governor till elections are held within 60 days.

Mutura is a former Member of Parliament for Makadara but took over from Beatrice Elachi resigned.

He won with 99 votes, beating loud contestants including Ken Ng’ondi, Abdi Ali, Washington Makodingo and  Allan Mang’era after Jubilee and ODM agreed that Raila’s party was to take the deputy speaker’s position.

It’s a battle of crooks for Nyeri’s 2022 gubernatorial contest

Nyeri county is bracing for a chaotic fight for the gubernatorial seat in 2022 with the growing list of controversial aspirants including Mathira MP Rigathi Gachagua and Peter Munyiri who have announced their bids to unseat Mutahi Kahiga.

The long list also includes the Health cabinet minister Mutahi Kagwe who is secretly plotting be the next kingpin of Central Kenya after President Uhuru Kenyatta retires in 2022.

Kagwe who lost the Jubilee Party ticket to the late Wahome Gakuru is also competing with the former presidential aspirant and former Gatanga MP Peter Kenneth for the kingpin title.

Gakuru won the seat on a Jubilee ticket died two months after the elections in a grisly road accident along Thika Road.

He became the second Nyeri governor to die in office with his demise creating room for his deputy Kahiga to rise to the top.

Mp Rigathi Gachagua, he has been widely mentioned in money laundering [p/courtesy]

Mathira Mp Rigathi Gachagua has downplayed intentions to go for the seat that was once held by his brother but reliable sources have revealed that his intention to run will implicate things for the corrupt banker, Peter Munyiri.

Rigathi is a close ally of William Ruto who stands the chance to give other aspirants  a run for their money with the DP going for the presidency in 2022.

The deputy president is currently enjoying massive support in Central Kenya meaning his candidates might scoop many seats.

Rigathi is as tainted as Munyiri.

In October 2020, the DCI had Rigathis bank accounts frozen as investigations into the Ksh12.5 billion scam intensified.

UN Votes to Remove Cannabis from list of Most Dangerous Drugs

Yesterday, the U.N commission on Narcotic Drugs  voted to remove cannabis as a Schedule IV controlled substance.

Cannabis

Courtesy image of a cannabis bud

This means, the United Nations has officially removed Canabis from the designation reserved for the most dangerous substances, such as heroin.

This particular classification is a subgroup of Category I in that a substance is considered to be highly addictive and highly liable for abuse, but also particularly harmful and of extremely limited medical or therapeutic value.

The narrow 27-25 vote comes after a recommendation from the World Health Organization launched more than two years ago to remove the substance from its previous classification.

WHO argued that the inclusion of cannabis and cannabis resin in Schedule IV is not consistent with the criteria for a drug to be placed in Schedule IV.

According to NPR, the WHO committee stated that while cannabis can cause dependence and have adverse effects, there is something to be said about its benefits, which includes reducing pain and nausea, in addition to easing symptoms of medical conditions such as anorexia, epilepsy, and multiple sclerosis.

The committee cited its limited robust scientific evidence on the therapeutic use of cannabis.

It is not really clear if the mention of limited robust scientific evidence suggests that if the U.N. were to move cannabis off the Schedule IV substance list, it would open the door for further research on a potentially global scale into the drug’s medicinal and therapeutic benefits.

One of the original reasons for the WHO making these recommendations were to open up the path to research and medical product development. Today’s results will hopefully encourage much activity in this field which will in the future enable further liberalization of cannabis and patient access.” Conor O’Brien, of the global industry analyst group Prohibition Partners, told NPR

Nairobi County Governor Mike Sonko Impeached

Mike Sonko, Nairobi Governor

Embattled and corrupt Nairobi County Governor Mike Mbuvi Kioko alias Sonko has been impeached.

Eighty-eight members of the County Assembly (MCAs) voted to oust the governor who has been facing corruption charges against him.

Only two MCAs, among those who were in the Assembly, voted against the motion.

At least 82 MCAs were required to support the motion for it to achieve the required two-thirds threshold.

Sonko has been impeached on grounds of abuse of office, gross misconduct as well as lack of capability to run county affairs, accusations that he has repeatedly denied.

Mike Sonko who was elected on a Jubilee party ticket in 2017 is not the first to face such a motion. Embu County Govoernor Wambora has faced but won against such moves.

The corrupt Kirinyanga Governor Anne Waiguru also survived thanks to Senate siding with her.

Kiambu second Governor Ferdinand Waititu was successfully removed from office in January 2020.

Impersonation

The semi-literate governor has cried wolf over impersonation of MCAs emails in the vote that was largely taken virtually.

“Numbers don’t lie see for yourself.1-57 Niko nao. As we continue with efforts to defeat the impeachment motion at the County Assembly, it’s unfortunate that those behind the scheme to bring me down have resorted to intimidation and dirty tricks to achieve their selfish interests. This morning over 70 Nairobi City County Assembly MCAs have filed a complaint with police on impersonation of their emails by rogue Assembly officials who want to interfere with online voting of the impeachment motion which is set for debate this afternoon”, Sonko wrote a few minutes before the impeachment vote was taken.
The Governor’s fate now lies in the hands of the Senate.

11 Points on Why Some of the BBI Recommendations Cannot Be Practically Implemented

$
0
0

The following are eleven key points to note and which have highlighted why some-perhaps most-of the BBI amendments can’t be practically implemented.

According to the reports, the Building Bridges Initiative signature collection drive has attracted over 4.6 million signatures since the exercise was launched.

Raila Odinga’s political backyard, formerly Nyanza Region, is topping the list of Counties with most signatures accounting for over 780,000.

By Wehliye Mohamed

BBI

President Uhuru Kenyatta(L) and Hon Raila Amolo Odinga’s Handshake

1. Some of the BBI amendments cannot even be practically implemented. Let’s look at the amendment to article 203 that caps the revenue the county with the highest per capita allocation will get, to 3 times the lowest.

2. Let’s use the current allocations of Ksh 316 transferred to counties in 19/21 FY. Tana River & Lamu get the highest per capita allocation of Ksh 18,533 & 18,033 respectively. Nairobi county gets the lowest at Ksh 3,621. Meaning no county should get more than Ksh 10,863.

3. 9 counties in total will be above this threshold and the cap means they would have to surrender Ksh 9.687b. This is where the problems start. First, there is no suggested method to share what will effectively be taken away from these 9 counties.

4. Secondly, redistributing the 9.687b to the other counties will move the cap upwards again. Natural justice would mean that the money would be redistributed bottom up with the lowest per capita getting most of it. On that basis, assume you take Nairobi’s per capita to Ksh 4,000

5. In such a case, the cap now moves to 3 times that number or Ksh 12,000. Lamu’s loss which was (18,033 – 10,863 = 7,170) per capita or Ksh 1.032b now becomes (18,033 -12,000 = 6,033) per capita or Ksh 868m. Will Lamu be given back the difference? If you do, you go back to square 1

6. Because of these kind of problems – a clear case of circular reference error – you should avoid inserting formulas into constitutions. Constitutions are high-level principle-based policy documents. Formulas are best left to where you can change them with time. CRA

7. Finally, this amendment makes per capita (population) override all the other 8 or so criteria in the same article and makes it unconstitutional. You can’t constitutionalize unconstitutionality. The courts will definitely read it alongside the other articles of the constitution

8. Constitution-making is a tedious process & needs serious thinking, impact analysis, stress testing & backtesting of any changes. These amendments have been done behind the scenes, in boardrooms and with hardly any testing of how they would work in practice.

9. The same people passionately pushing them today will be crying tomorrow because of their unintended consequences. Variables will change with time & you can’t do referenda now and then. Why variables are never hardcoded and only high-level policy is. Standard practice!

10. For the record, I am opposed to the whole BBI for reasons I have said here b4. Some of the changes will definitely cause a constitutional crisis like the 2/3 gender. We will not be able to give 600b to counties. Won’t afford to recur expend of the expanded exec & bunge either!

Inside Kisumu Pentagon’s aggressive plot to dislodge MP Shabir in 2022

A cocoon of aspirants in Kisumu East parliamentary seat have united to dislodge area MP Shakeel Shabbir in the coming 2022 general elections.

The five-member team that now calls itself ‘The pentagon’ has Nahashon Oguya and Joab Ndege, Kevin Amimo, Ben Juma and one John Anditi.

The team basically comprises of busy bodies from different clans within the constituency who are not happy about ‘an outsider’ leading them.

Oguya was one time the chairman of the Kisumu county public service board while Anditi comes from Kajulu clan with the rest coming from Kolwa, the two are the largest clans in Kisumu East.

‘The Pentagon’ is experimenting the same scheme that failed in 2017 after Shakeel shocked them by retaining his seat on an independent ticket after defeating the ex-Kenya Sugar board director Nicholas Oricho who relied on ODM euphoria in the region.

The pentagon blamed Oricho for making poorly calculated political moves  that left enough loopholes for Shakeel who is of Asian descent to beat Raila Odinga’s candidate.

Oguyo’s team claimed that Oricho won the party ticket but was not appealing to the voters at all yet he remained on a comfort zone thinking he had won just because he was an ODM ticket holder.

But even in the neighbouring Kisumu West, MP Olago Aluoch staged a spirited fight and retained his seat on Ford Kenya ticket despite the orange onslaught.

Kisumu Governor Prof. Anyang’ Nyong’o [p/courtesy]

Pentagon operations have left observers poking holes on their mission to unseat Shabbir who continues to enjoy back to back support of the people since 2007.

Shabir took over from the then dismally performing Gor Sungu who had to force himself into retirement from politics and a low profile life after investigations into the murder of former Foreign Affairs minister Robert Ouko left him a marked man.

Sungu once chaired a parliamentary select committee that was probing the brutal murder of ex-foreign affairs minister.

He tried to make a desperate come back after starring in sexual scandals with the widow of the late Luo Rhumba crooner, Musa Juma.

Gor Sungu did not even go beyond party nominations in 2017.

The aggressive scheme to oust Shabbir is not based on his performance but race and solid relationship with the electorate.

Anditi claims that Shabbir’s three terms in the office have benefited voters with any development to show a part from perfecting the art of tokenism through maize flour contribution to funerals.

The Pentagon also claims that the slowed development is a result of the bad relationship between the lawmaker and Kisumu Governor Anyang’ Nyong’o.

Shabbir once embarrassed the governor over plans to build the
63-kilometre Mamboleo- Muhoroni road where Shabbir accused Nyong’o of misleading the public on the planned works on the road.

He made a solo protest to Nyong’o and told people that as a member of the finance committee in the national assembly, there was no budget for the road as claimed by Nyong’o who was out to hoodwink the people for political mileage.

But Shabbir was later left to hang dry after treasury approved Sh4.9 billion for the construction of the sugar belt road.

The pentagon group is also blaming the MP for the general poor academic performance in the constituency with many mixed schools that are poorly equiped.

They are also accusing Shabbir’s wife of nepotism and conflict of interest by serving as the constituency manager.

CAPTION: A FILE photo of Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko dancing in his office

Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko was on Thursday impeached in a controversial manner as 88 out of 122 Nairobi Members of County Assembly voted to kick him out of power over what they termed as abuse of office, gross misconduct and lack of capability to run county affairs.

This was despite him having flown out about 57 MCAs to the coast in an unsuccessful attempt to counter the impeachment motion by Speaker Benson Mutura.

His strategy was to ensure more than a third of the ward representatives were out of Nairobi at the time of the motion, which would have effectively denied the impeachment the two-thirds majority needed for it to pass.

The plan, however, fell apart after Speaker Mutura called for voting to be conducted through a video link so that all MCAs could participate.

Shortly after, MCAs allied to the governor rushed to the Kwale Police Station to report that their accounts on the video link platform had been hacked and that they had been impersonated by rogue Assembly officials.

Contrary claims, however, suggest that some of the MCAs part of the trip to the Coast might have voted virtually and in favour of his ouster by proxy arrangement.

Thread of Sonko’s most memorable moments…

As Sonko now nurses the pains of treacherous UhuRuto politics and joins the list of impeached county heads, Kenyans on social media took it upon themselves to honour Sonko’s prematurely ended tenure with some of his most memorable clips.

The Twitter thread was started by popular content creator Brian Mutinda who posted an old video of a seemingly tipsy Sonko chewing on khat LIVE on Facebook which went viral back in 2019.

In the rather unsettling 1 minute and 44 seconds, the governor could be heard asking some his social media followers to share their details so he could wire to them some cash.

Netizens soon flooded the replies section with their own favourite clips, and up next was an excerpt from his controversial interview on popular talk show JKL last year where Mike Sonko sensationally claimed that he used to smoke bhang with his Kiambu counterpart Ferdinand Waitituback when they were Members of Parliament.

“He used to smoke a lot of bhang when he was an MP, I’m a witness to this, we used to go to a certain toilet there… we used to smoke a lot of bhang with this guy…

He was hiding bhang in the socks.. he rolls so many… I’m a witness… I’m not smoking anymore him he’s still smoking as the governor of Kiambu,” he boldly declares in the interview.

Then came the famous video of the governor singing along to Eunice Njeri’s “Nani Kama Wewe” in tears after a court dismissed a petition challenging Sonko’s win in the August 8, 2017, elections.

Another one was a clip from when the governor decided to feature in an up and coming musician’s music video in 2019, with the hit song from back then “Party After Party” by Ugandan artist BigTrill edited into the background.

Next up was one from just over a month ago when the city boss closed an entire road to celebrate Mashujaa Day in October this year.

The celebration that took place in front of its headquarters at City Hall featured only its staff, Askaris County mounting a guard of honour and a few curious onlookers.

Other clips under the thread included the unforgettable moment when the governor squirmed in pain as detectives handcuffed him at Ikanga Airstrip in Voi during his dramatic arrest in 2018, his infamous COVID-19 relief packages earlier this year which included popular alcoholic drink, Hennessy, among others.

What next for Sonko?

Following Thursday’s events, the Speaker of the County Assembly now seven days to submit the resolution to impeach Governor Sonko to the Senate.

The Senate will then vote to either uphold the impeachment charges or dismiss it. If acquitted, Sonko will resume his duties as Nairobi Governor, but if the decision is upheld, the governor will be deemed to have lost his seat.

Upon losing his seat, the Speaker of Nairobi County Assembly will take over Nairobi leadership for 60 days within which the IEBC has to organize and hold by-elections for the replacement.

Kenyans Need Civic Education: Majority Think Signature Endorsing BBI is Final

$

Referenda is a very foreign concept that many Kenyans do not seem to understand. The Building Bridges Initiative (BBI) relies on this to pass, the lack of knowledge, if Kenyans think it has already passed on the very first step we are a doomed country.

BBI assumes everybody is well informed and fully understands the question and its implications to them. Here, Kenyans have already lined up to sign something they have neither seen, read, or understood. They are ‘sadly’ doing what they have been told by their tribal chiefs.

There was no inclusion of education, just a bunch of documents that have been the top story every day on githeri media, as at now the majority of Kenyans think that now that, because the pamphlet thing that is a lie has 4.6 Million signatures, BBI has passed and that President Uhuru Kenyatta and Raila Odinga will just call CJ Maraga and edit the constitution for the changes to take effect.

Since the launch of the BBI report there have been a few but critical issues on what Uhuru Kenyatta and Raila Odinga’s plans. One, they have confirmed that BBI will go through the popular initiative and not the parliamentary amendment process.

Most Kenyans do not know the process of a referendum since they have not even read the current constitution. The Constitution provides two pathways for constitutional amendments. The parliamentary and the popular initiative. The parliamentary process essentially requires a Member of Parliament to table a constitutional amendment Bill in Parliament in the same way a statutory Bill is tabled. However, a constitutional amendment Bill that is based on a parliamentary process must garner at least two-thirds support from parliamentarians at the second and third readings for it to pass, even if it involves issues that require a referendum.

BBI uses the popular initiative process. This process means any Kenyan, in their private capacity, can initiate an amendment if they desire certain changes to the Constitution that their Mpigs may not be too enthusiastic about. This makes it sure that people’s fate to change the Constitution does not entirely rely exclusively on the willingness of their representatives to initiate amendments.

To make sure that people do not misuse the popular initiative route of amending the Constitution, the supreme law created an initial onerous process for the sponsor of the amendment to surmount. This means that for a popular initiative process to commence, it requires the collection of one million signatures from voters who support the Bill.

After the sponsor has managed to get the one million signatures through the use of their own resources, the formal process can then be initiated and public money can be used to support the amendment process.

First, the IEBC will verify the signatures before forwarding the draft Bill to each county assembly for consideration within three months after the date it was submitted by the Commission.

If a county assembly approves the draft Bill, the speaker of the county assembly shall deliver a copy of the draft Bill jointly to the Speakers of the two Houses of Parliament together with a certificate that the county assembly has approved it.

Here it will need to be approved by a majority (24) of the county assemblies. At least 12 broad legislative proposals are expected to be enacted by Parliament to implement parts of the report.

The BBI report will then finally be subjected to a referendum for Kenyans to approve or reject the changes if the Parliament adopts it.

Infinite Enslavement To Church Is Price To Pay For Marrying Church Girls

TV Personalities Waihiga Mwaura and Joyce Omondi

To keep Kenyans permanently enslaved to the church and its warped agenda, top clerics led by the late Catholic Archbishop Ndingi Mwana Nzeki lobbied through late former dictator Daniel Arap Moi, to have religious studies embedded in the 8-4-4 curriculum.

Meaning that impotent courses which have zero impact to your life like CRE and IRE were imposed on young helpless children, and enforced using violence or punishment by teachers.

It was a two-pronged approach because while the church was able to nurture its next lot of slaves to tithe and keep their vanity white elephant projects on-going, the state was able to get a new generation of sterile voters, who only need to hear a few religious words aligned with political context, to vote in the next set of crooks like how Deputy President William Ruto has aligned himself with corrupt clergy.

Religion has also been used as a weapon to suppress revolutionary sentiment amongst young people, who are fatigued by songs like “El-Shadai” by Hart-The-Band, “Omba” by Ringtone and “Sio Juju Ni Maombi”, songs created to condition masses into suffering for as long as they pray.

These songs are sponsored by the church and state to ensure citizens don’t ask hard political questions and instead look forward to a better afterlife in the fictional place called heaven.

None have bore the brunt of this mass brainwashing process more than the female gender, many of whom attended church ran schools spread across the country.

Schools like Precious Blood, Sacred Heart, Loreto’s, and many others are all ran by the Catholic Church, with many more spread between Anglican, SDA and the likes. These schools created a generation of zombies who even despite adequate further education and exposure, will still revert to religion as a default.

The church in its endeavor to recruit a new generation of robots to serve their sterile agenda, have roped in new young and “fresh” faces who can be able to spread their toxicity through relatable content and communication mediums.

And what agenda is this? Well it largely revolves around money. Churches need money to invest in their vanity phantom projects. These include humongous churches built at fictitious costs, money which is largely pocketed by a few church elders and clergy.

To enable this financial conveyor-belt to thrive, the elders and church establishment need young brainwashed religious off-shoots to recruit members of the working class, who will then underwrite these financial undertakings by tithing and contributing to the numerous harambee’s that churches engage in.

Some of the young faces recruited by church include Reverend Lucy Natasha and Joyce Omondi Waihiga.

As the country grapples with the realities of the Corona Pandemic, the church have proven to be the most useless component of life, as everyone turns their attention to science and logic, to save themselves and their families.

You haven’t seen anyone turning to the church for a solution to the pandemic, because it’s clear that they’re incapable of offering meaningful solutions to emerging challenges presenting themselves in the world today. People are looking up to scientific clusters led by Pfizer, Moderna, Oxford & Harvard Universities for a solution. Nobody is going to Pastor Nganga or Wilfred Lai.

Over the last 30 years, Kenyans across the country have contributed massively to build vanity projects conceptualized by the church. These are mostly churches which are only used once a week, and require huge resources to maintain.

Instead of churches building hospitals and investing in research which would have come in handy during a pandemic, they opted to build massive and opulent buildings at inflated costs, so that church elders and parish committee members can steal church coffers and award themselves supply tenders.

Which is why marrying ladies who have had religious exposure in high school and university, both institutions meant to unleash the mental potential of students, is a massive liability for young men.

The church has found a way of controlling households through the brainwashing conducted by embedding religion in the curriculum, especially in girl’s schools, where a gender-specific narrative was created to pit boys and girls in a constant ideological conflict.

It is through the efforts of religion that things like lesbianism have risen, because schools and churches have sown the seeds of discord, constantly projecting opposite genders as enemies. Young girls and boys are separated and profiled at an early age creating an unnecessary moral and ideological rift.

Boys with poor social skills and who have recently joined the job market, are then advised by these “elders” to look for wives in church, wives who come with an unwritten rider.

The rider is that while you will enjoy your time with these “faithful” women, a time to repay will come. The church is able to tool these women to endure your years of mid-life crisis, alcoholism and extra-marital affairs because they’ve mastered the phase of human growth. They know full well that by a certain age, men will get tired and revert to their wives.

And when that day comes, you will be doing as god commands through the church and this structure of corruption involving elders and committee’s.

Meaning that you will tithe, contribute to hatambee’s, provide personal financial support to church leaders and basically leave your entire financial machinery at their disposal. The entry point of the church into family finances is always through the wives. In many instances, this dalliance and fraternizing with religion has left many families broke and destitute.

So if you don’t want to end up in this artificial cycle of poverty, vet the schools and universities your potential wife attended. Because surely you will get a “good” wife, but will pay dearly to corrupt church structures, money which you can use to invest in your children who guarantee better returns as opposed to investing in heaven which is as fictional as Jubilee’s historic stadium in Kamariny.

Muthama pocketing hand-outs and allowances meant for Ukambani hustlers

Politicians allied to the Deputy President Dr. William Ruto, mostly first term Mps are embroiled in a bitter war with Ex-Machakos Senator Mr Johnston Muthama over leadership roles and distribution of hand-outs from the DP.

The Mps are now threatening to bolt out of the ‘Hustler’s Movement’ if the tyrant Muthama will remain the man leading Ukambani Hustlers.

They want Ruto to trim him of excessive powers for ignoring them when planning DP’s events in the region and when distributing hand-outs or allowances from the DP.

The Mps accusing Muthama of starving them of DP’s cash include Mwala’s Vincent Musyoka, Nimrod Mbai of Kitui East, Victor Munyaka of Machakos Town and Fabian Kyule of Kangundo Constituency.

The loudly raised their concerns over allowances and Muthama’s leadership style arguing that they have remained sycophantic to the Deputy President despite the support that Kalonzo Musyoka’s Wiper party and Alfred Mutua’s emerging Chap Chap are enjoying in the region.

Muthama with a handful of Ruto allies in a past event [p/courtesy]

They also claim to have been with Ruto way before Muthama came in and hijacked the campaigns for selfish gains including exercising his uncouth dictatorship.

The former Machakos Senator has now cut the Mps direct access to the DP by playing the role of a middle man where he easily pockets their weekly allowances and random hand-outs.

He is now rudely calling shots and elbowing out coward Mps including his traditional allies from the days he was Kalonzo’s mouthpiece.

Muthama who was first welcomed by the same MPs when he came from Kalonzo’s camp is also accused of being a bully, rogue lone ranger and a poor team-player.

He began his autocracy by gathering these Mps in his Mua home where he would make phone calls with the DP on loudspeaker to address the leaders and chant further political moves.

But such meetings would end with the Mps furious after Muthama repeatedly failed to give them hand-outs wired from the DP and his operatives.

Ruto only learnt of the wars when the Mps gave one of his Karen functions a wide berth with Muthama showing up with fellow former Senators Hassan Omar and Boni Khalwale instead.

The DP dished out some Sh4 million for the attendees on that day and later summoned the Mps who revealed how Muthama had side-lined them in all the dealings.

Muthama is only working closer with the former Machakos deputy governor Bernard Kiala pushing the Mps to accuse the DP of bypassing elected leaders and working with political failures in advancing his political moves in the region.

They openly told the deputy president that the old tactic of Muthama calling Kalonzo a political failure will never work since the former VP is still the undisputed political king of the Kambas.

Ruto who was in agreement then instructed the Mps to plot independent projects and outshine Muthama once the Covid-19 pandemic is managed, with a promise to bankroll them.

This blog can authoritatively report that the DP also concurred with the Mps that Muthama’s uncontrolled abrasiveness is dealing the hustler’s image major blows and reversing the gains brought by the hustler narrative.

Ruto was also in shock after he learnt that Muthama was inflating bills on food, accommodation and supplies by his Amazing Grace Hotel which wins all the bids to host functions held on his behalf.

The upcoming tycoon was also busted for invoicing Ruto Sh2 million at every event, even those attended by 20 people just because Ruto is desperate to get a share of the 1.5 million Kamba votes.

But Muthama still remains the DP’s point man leading the complaining clique and performing duties in other neighboring regions including Coast’s Msambweni Constituency where he is leading campaigns with Hassan Omar.

Hustlers are backing an independent candidate in the by-elections set for December 15 to fill the seat that was left vacant after the area Mp Suleim Dori passed in March.

Ruto’s candidate is aiming to win the seat that was held by the ODM party which is the hustler’s number one sworn enemy.

Complaint from Presbyterian Teachers’ Training College – Rubate

$

This is a complaint regarding exams as narrated by a Rubate Teachers Training College (TTC) student.

From Inbox

Hello Nyakundi. Kindly highlight this.

Some Student teachers at Rubate TTC in Chuka are/will not be allowed to be externally assessed in teaching practice just because they have fee arrears.

This is happening in most colleges and the government must come out clear. How do you deny a student a chance to do his final assessment only for them to get results which says CRNM(course requirement not met)?

This assessment was supposed to be done before PTE, but due to Corona issues it was postponed. It is very discouraging.

Now just imagine that they have prepared 2 lists one with the ones with 0 balance. And these are the ones to be presented to the external assessors. The rest’s fate is unknown. Surely there are somethings that happen behind the governments back.

Information so far is that the ones who have not cleared fees will be marked as absent. How is that possible yet students are in college. Just highlight the issue and get answers from people who have been victims even if you prefer not to name the exact TTC. But we are suffering in the hands of these administrators and the so called Teaching practice Directors.

This teaching practice was supposed to be done before the final exam (KNEC PTE) but due to corona issue ikasukumwa after juu primary schools hazikuwa in session. If we as students miss these marks the results usually reflect as CRNM.

How surely can i be allowed to sit for my final exam only to be denied some marks just because someone needs money?

Not every student come from a wealthy background. We should be allowed to do the TP then go look for cash, clear then we get our certificates because we need them in our lives. We are really frustrated bro

Kindly highlight.

Inside the heirs’ fight to control late tycoon Nginyo Kariuki’s estate

$
0
0

The son of the late tycoon and politician Lawrence Nginyo Kariuki wants the High Court to allow him run his father’s Sh4 billion estate as he accuses his mother and siblings of transferring cash from corporate to personal accounts.

James Kariuki told the court that the estate risks being mismanaged and wasted away with the wars already affecting the running and decision-making in the disputed estate.

Tycoon Kariuki passed on February 24, leaving behind a contested Will between his widow, Margaret Nginyo, her six children and three from two other women.

The battle erupted in Margaret’s household was initially united to keep away the three children born out of wedlock that include Austine Wachira,  Brenda Nyambura Kiragu and Alex Ndoria Karuri.

James is accusing his mother and siblings Silas Macharia Kariuki, Scholastica Njeri Kariuki and Jane Wambui Kariuki of liquidating a total of Sh71 million in fixed deposit accounts of Pema Holdings Limited at I&M Bank.

He told the court that the amount was transferred in two transactions to a current account without his knowledge.

Court documents show that Sh61 million was withdrawn from the Pema Holdings account and transferred to the joint account behind his back.

“It is my belief the 4th defendant (his mother) has been guided in her actions by the 5th, 6th and 7th defendants (his siblings).

James’ step sisters, Brenda had also sued Consolidated Bank, I&M Bank and Co-operative Bank  for offering Margaret’s children access to the funds without letters of administration.

The late tycoon had a total of Sh335 million in fixed deposit accounts with Consolidated Bank of Kenya and other savings accounts at Equity and Habib Bank with undisclosed amounts.

The late Nginyo Kariuki was a heavy investor in real estate, farming and government bonds but the estate has become the subject of an inheritance court fight after another woman popped out claiming to be a widow of the late politician together with the three other children born out of wedlock and were all excluded from the Will.

Nginyo Towers in Nairobi’s CBD is part of the property owned by the late tycoon [p/courtesy]

Brenda had pushed for the extraction of DNA before Nginyo’s burial to prove that the late tycoon was her father.

James who seems to be reading from the same page with the other three children also told the court that it was his father’s wish for him to lead the family business but he was challenged by one Jane, eldest child who started giving roles to other siblings.

“I noticed my sister, Jane, was imposing herself in business matters with little knowledge of the work that my father and I had done for 25 years…her actions did not align with our father’s wishes. Dad made it clear that in his absence, I as the eldest son, should take over the leadership of his business affairs.” James said.

The kind of authority James is seeking will see him run the estate under the supervision of the court meaning he will not have the power to distribute assets belonging to the estate.

“That I have pleaded with my family and then probate lawyer, to a point that I have been forced to abandon my attempts at an amicable resolution so as not to appear to be taking sides,” James said in the affidavit.

The late Kariuki succeeded in business than in politics with court papers showing that he owned land and buildings in Nairobi, Kiambu and Ngong valued at Sh3.2 billion.

He also owns Nginyo Towers in Nairobi’s central business district, a 120-acre farmland in Tigoni, Kiambu while Nginyo Investments and Pema Holdings have assets valued at Sh221.3 million.

Kakiuki also invested over Sh84 million in government bond and owned shares in a number of firms listed at the Nairobi Securities Exchange valued at Sh18.5 million.

The tycoon’s biggest stock market investment is 101,200 shares of East African Breweries Limited (EABL) which is now valued at Sh17.2 million.

But the case before the court threatens to freeze the deceased’s estate that might leave the heirs with about Sh400 million each if it is equally distributed to Margaret, her six children and the other three born out of wedlock.

Storm At KRA As Thousands Are Sent Home

Mr David Kinuu. Spearheader of corrupt process at KRA LACED with corruption and favouritism.

There is a storm at the Kenya Revenue Authority over an unfair process that has seen many staffers that were on contract terminated.

According to an insider that spoke to this blog, the process is being spearheaded by Mr David Kinuu, a former notorious Telco staffer who has been accused of mismanagement.

The Kenya Revenue Authority has been hiring staffer on three years contract that is renewable based on your performance.

But when Mr Kinuu, the master of the universe arrived from Safaricom as the new KRA KRA Commissioner Corporate Support Services, he introduced new rules that required all staff to get 70% PassMark, to get permanent and pensionable jobs. This means that the era of contract staffers would come to an immediate end.

In the first assessment, all the 3,500 contract staffers got 70% and above, and Mr. Kinuu with his infinite wisdom readjusted the PassMark to 90%.

Now, this is where games began.

We have confirmed that the first biggest casualties were the staffers that ever got pregnant during this review period, they failed!

Now, the Taxman wants us ( The dumb Kenyans ) to believe that only 800 staffers hit the 90% PassMark…But wait..

As those that could not crack the 90% PassMark were getting terminated, the games of musical chairs begun…

The deletion of names of those that had no godfathers started. Some names of the people that were in the group of the qualified were cancelled and replaced with those with godfathers, something that the CG James Mburu must be ashamed of.

The shenanigans by the HR firm from outside almost blew up when they knocked on the door of KRA Intelligence & Strategic Operations department where Commissioner Dr. Terra Saidimu protested and said he would not expose his officers and they agreed to set up an in house team to run the process!

Dr. Terra Saidimu defended his department staffers.

As Mr. Kinuu runs the corrupt, unfair process, staffers stare at a bleak future and wonder why CG Mburu has delegated all this power to the corporate mindset that wants to bring notorious Telco Safaricom mindset to Kenya Revenue Authority

As you well know, media won’t highlight all this because of advertising dollars from the taxman.

EPIC FAIL: CS Joe Mucheru Exposed For Masquerading As A Youth

$

CS JOE MUCHERU: He attended High School between 1983 and 1988

Kenya’s Cabinet Secretary for the Ministry of Information and Communications (ICT) Joseph “Joe” Mucheru had a rough start to the week after an attempt to pull one of his dubious publicity stunts failed terribly, giving way for internet trolls to mop the floor with the former Lenana School graduate.

Mucheru’s long day with online bullies all started with a Monday morning post on his official Twitter handle, where he uploaded a selfie from the Bomas of Kenya, with the caption: “Youth take over BOMAS of Kenya to deliberate your issues..”

What caught netizens’ attention, however, is the fact that most of the faces sat behind the CS didn’t necessarily reflect those of the Kenyan youth as we know them, especially given that he was attending the launch of the #KenyaNiMimi Youth Campaign – an initiative which purportedly seeks to create awareness on available government opportunities for young Kenyans.

Within no time, tweeps soon flooded his mentions, taking turns to remind Mucheru of two obvious realities: One, that he is certainly past the age where a grown man like himself should regard himself as a “youth”, and two, that the event, just like many others in the past, is just a circus, where a few hungry and desperate young chaps are invited to Bomas and other social halls and the event is quickly dubbed a “Youth Conference” where only top organizers and officials check-in fat cheques.

“Youth issues are known by everyone without this wastage on tea and mandazis. You little puppet” began one Kenyan.

“When they talk of the YOUTH, over 50-year old grandfathers are not part of the equation!” noted another one.

“According to you guys in government, a youth is someone who has a small body physique and a good political connection, right? Bure kabisa!” one replied.

Is CS Joe Mucheru A Youth?

When he was campaigning for his second term, the President promised to expand the participation of young people in national development, and guarantee that 30 per cent of all appointments, projects and budgets specifically target them.

Uhuru’s manifesto said he prioritised youth employment and pledged to create at least 6.5 million jobs by 2022.

However, appointments made by President Uhuru since 2017 revealed his love for retirees, even as millions of young Kenyans languish in unemployment.

The list of the President’s recent appointments is dominated by old men and a handful of women, some of whom served in Government long before a majority of Kenyans alive today were even born.

Over time, Kenyan youth have also come to understand the government and its numerous “projects” purporting to help “empower” the youth as a total hoax just meant to con and milk the struggling blooming society dry.

This is evident from the various policy and institutional reforms like the Youth Enterprise Fund, Ajira and others which claim to promote the youth in business people yet young people across the country continue to face countless hurdles in attempting to set up commercial ventures.

It is, therefore, no wonder when such frustrated youth are quick to lash out at some of these so-called “Young Leaders” like Mucheru (at least 50-years-old ) who pretend to be all for the young Kenyan just for clout and hefty subsidies.

In their eye, the Kenyan youth still remains nothing more than just voting machines which can only discuss their issues in forums but shouldn’t be allowed decisions or opportunities which steer their destiny.
