The press corps in Canada have FINALLY picked up on the shady redundancy transactions at M-Kopa Solar in 2018 and it is a developing scandal there.

According to Winnipe Sun, FinDev Canada, which functions as a subsidiary of Export Development Canada, gave nearly $13 million to a Nairobi company that turned around and laid off its 150 workers.

In its first deal, FinDev gave $12.8 million to Nairobi company M-Kopa Solar, which distributed cellphones and solar-powered appliances on an instalment plan to African villagers.

The agency, which was created in 2017 with $300 million in funding over five years “to support private sector investment in developing countries,” held back Access To Information records on the Nairobi deal for a year, and censored documents.

FinDev’s website on the Kenyan company M-Kopa Solar notes that the group’s focus is on “reducing carbon emissions” by contributing to the reduction of kerosene usage.

According to Blacklock’s, M-Kopa handed out layoff notices two weeks after signing on with FinDev:

Its first funding, a total $12.8 million, went to M-Kopa Solar of Nairobi, a direct sales company distributing cellphones and solar-powered appliances on the installment plan to African villagers. “We just received word that FinDev Canada’s first deal has officially closed!” wrote staff.

The M-Kopa contract was signed February 28, 2018. It was publicly disclosed March 13. Days later on March 15 M-Kopa announced it laid off 150 employees.

Memos from FinDev note that Lamontage offered to manage the M-Kopa contract despite the office not yet having enough employees to manage the deal.

“Since our investment officers will not start until the summer, I will manage the relationship with M-Kopa and serve as our board observer,” wrote Lamontagne in a 2018 memo. “As you know, this makes sense as I have a history in Kenya having previously served as chair of a local impact fund. In fact, I just returned from meeting M-Kopa in Nairobi.”

At the time the subsidy was granted, FinDev’s nine employees included a “gender advisor” and a “social media and marketing specialist”.

This is a confirmation that they use these funds for their own benefit as they lie that they are helping Africans. 

In 2015, M-Kopa was exposed by Bloomberg for Making a Profit on Poor Africans and there have been suspicions that M-Kopa is doing money-laundering for Wazungus.

A few days ago, We-Charity was exposed for engaging in corruption in Kenya under the guise of doing charity. 

It is also interesting to note that M-Kopa just released their 2019 accounts. In contrast to their 2018 accounts this time they DID NOT disclose how much they spent on work permits for foreigners to come to Kenya.

But, According to a financial statement that we have seen, the company used USD133,929 (approximately Ksh13,392,900) in 2017 and USD56,065 (Ksh5,606,500) in 2018 to secure permits for foreigners to work in Kenya.

Losses were US$ 10,700,000 in 2019 so improved than the US$ 15,700,000 loss in 2018.

Kenya’s President Uhuru Kenyatta is expected to take a break from the office in the coming days, latest reports now say.

According to information circulating on social media, diplomats based in Nairobi have today been notified of President Uhuru’s incoming absence from duty over reasons yet to be immediately established, but suspected to be a breather ahead of the festive season.

In their statement, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Nairobi today declared that the Head of State is set to take a one-month leave from 15th December 2020 to 15th January 2021.

The news shared by among others, top Standard Digital journalist Mosoku Geoffrey on his Facebook page, has drawn mixed reactions from netizens, with some viewing it as a much-needed break for Uhuru who is approaching his 8th year in power, whilst some were left unconvinced that he deserves one.

The ODM legislator says Kikuyu votes can only to be “rented” and not bought

“In 2022 Kenyans should vote for ideas not money. There is one guy who said you can rent a Kikuyu but you cannot buy them. We are leasing them right now to support us and we reciprocating on this Building Bridges Initiative (BBI) thing…but they will never ever support Raila Odinga,” Ole Kina told journalists.

“In everything they do, these people (Kikuyus) are not honest…it’s rather unfortunate…If they were to support Raila then they would have solved this issue of Kedong ranch which we believe is our ancestral land taken away from us…we have spoken with Raila who has communicated the message to Uhuru but they will never agree to let it go.”

The senator’s remarks come after the local dailies today headline story insinuated that Uhuru and Ruto’s allies have been holding secret discussions behind the NASA coalition leader’s back.

This is after DP Ruto’s close ally, Hon. James Gakuya (Embakasi North) said Uhuru and Ruto allies had been called to hold down talks on BBI to resolve the stalemate between the two ruling political leaders.

These developments could be viewed with alarm from Raila’s corner.

Hello and good afternoon,

I am writing to you to register a concern I have after eating lunch prepared by one of your branches.

On Saturday 4/12/2020, I visited you branch at Buruburu and bought two lunch boxes (chips and two bottles of soda with burger and two chicken pieces) and streetwise 2 amounting to Kshs 1530.

After reaching home, we embarked on eating the delicious meal bought from KFC.

Everything went on well until late in the evening where we started stomach challenges, loss of appetite and also experience diarrhea.

As am writing this to you, am still experiencing stomach upsets and now a feeling of vomiting keeps coming.

What was wrong or what is going on with your food?

The experience am having is changing my view and perception about your food.

Please check how you prepare food as well as the kind of food you serve people as it is making people sick.

A spot check by cnyakundi.com shows that the KFC branch which opened last year has been having low customer numbers hence it is possible that the foods remain unbought for days, but KFC still sells to clients due to greed.

KRA GG Githii Mburu

Hello Cyprian, I work with KRA but for my safety and job security. Kindly do not disclose my name. I have been a contract staff since 2014. Earlier this year the CG, Mr. Mburu communicated an intention to confirm us I.e all contract staff who had worked more than 2 years, except for those who had Integrity issues.

At the point we were being trained on the validation process we were to go through, we had been told the cut-off mark for one to be considered for permanent and Pensionable terms was 70% and above. We were validated for the financial years 2018/2019 and 2019/2020, for which they calculated an average for the two years to arrive at the final score.

However, the Board through the CG, later on, shifted the Goalpost after the completion of the validation process and the compilation of the final marks, the CG communicated that the Marks for one to be confirmed should be 90% and above, making only 41% of 2000 staff who underwent validation to be confirmed eventually.

The larger Contract staff at KRA currently feel betrayed and are of low morale as they face uncertainty about what will happen after the six Months(1st December 2020 to 31st May 2021)they have been given to improve and attain 90% above. There is no clarity on what will happen after the six months other than the threat of termination of the contract,we are not certain whether we will be confirmed if you score higher, given a new contract and whether the score will remain the same.

The permanent staff and other contract staff who had not gone through the validation process are to undergo the process anytime before January, though there is a lot of tension and some are even sceptical on what the process intends to achieve.

The Final score ignores a lot of technical issues and cases whereof disabilities or terminal illness and those working from home.

Given that KRA has no staff union the employees suffer in silence for fear of victimization and fear of being fired.

The entire validation process has killed the organizational Team spirit, since everyone is fighting for themselves. The validation process seems to have had a predetermined outcome before the process.

This has largely affected Revenue collection since staff spend a lot of time to gather evidence; there has equally been concerned from clients regarding Time taken to clear cargo and time taken to have their issues resolved given the concentration given by staff towards the validation, which has been seen to determine their future stay in the organization.

We booked with fly540 to Lodwar from JKIA today. We were to fly at 0100HRS to Lodwar – they announced a 1 Hour delay which we waited… We waited till 5 PM they communicated to us that the flight won’t go to Lodwar. We asked why they said there’s a mechanical problem.

As for me, the company takes care of the clients if such cases arise – they told us we take care of ourselves – they won’t accommodate us – Sisi twende, we come to Wilson.

We paid for a one-way ticket at a cost of 23,080/= for 2 customers.

We stranded here at JKIA.

The attackers were 3 Kenyans and 2 Somalis. The Al-Shabaab video purportedly shows the attackers the day before the attack somewhere in Nairobi, having food, drinks, and watching a video of Osama Bin Laden.

Julius Wambua, a man who was jailed eight years ago for life over allegedly defiling his own daughter has been freed.

Wambua’s story came to the public eye after his daughter recanted her evidence in the rape case on national television. Dorcas Wambua stated that she was coached by her mother to accuse the father of raping her.

Justice George Odunga quashed the ruling of the Kithimani magistrate Court and the subsequent proceedings at the High court. The judge ordered for a retrial if the Director of Public Prosecutions finds it viable considering the amount of public interest the case has generated.

Odunga released Wambua on a cash bail of 30,000 shillings and an alternative bond of 200,000 shillings with a surety of a similar amount pending retrial.

Tainted Nairobi Lawyer Tom Ojienda has been under social media heat after it emerged that he had lost a claim of Sh94 million from the Nairobi county government for legal services he offered six years ago.

The lawyer, a senior counsel, wanted Sh94,415,185 but the Employment and Labour Court’s Deputy Registrar said he should be paid Sh448,328 exposing how these lawyers walking in designer suits are conmen who rob without violence.

Social media users went ham on the lawyer questioning his past deeds.

For decades now, Ojienda has handled almost all of Kidero’s financial dealings. Authorities have intimated that Kidero’s vast wealth, estimated at over Sh9 billion, is far beyond what he could have earned during his working career.

At one time, the lawyer was arrested over Tax arrears that he said were false. On its part, the KRA said it wanted Prof Ojienda to settle tax arrears amounting to Sh823 million.

Court papers showed the KRA had two claims against Ojienda, one for Sh444 million as total tax due between 2009 and 2016; and another one amounting to Sh379 million for the period 2011 to 2016, periods through which Kidero was at the helm of Mumias and Nairobi County Government respectively.

For a long time, the lawyer has cultivated a clean image yet he profits off manipulating legal fees and targets government institutions with some malicious claims tilting to his favour.

A few days ago, National Land Commission (NLC) lost a bid to stop him from demanding a Sh166 million payment for legal services his law firm offered in 2014.

Also, the lawyer is seeking to be paid Sh75 million by the Nairobi county government for services rendered during governor Evans Kidero’s tenure.

The head of Google Communication and Public Affairs for Africa Dorothy Ooko has responded to Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni’s vacuity.

Museveni, the longest-serving dictator had written to Google through Uganda Communications Commission (UCC) asking YouTube to take down 17 channels allied to veteran musician-cum-politician Bobi Wine.

Dorothy Ooko in her quick and brief response to UCC’s request to take down 17 YouTube accounts that have largely been publishing or live-streaming content from presidential candidate Robert Kyagulanyi’s (Bobi Wine) campaign trail said that;

“it is very hard to just have a channel removed due to a government request.”

The channels that UCC is targeting have been gaining traction because of the content they publish, most of which is enhancing Kyagulanyi’s messages.

In a letter dated December 9, 2020, to the Chief Executive Officer Google Inc, UCC said that the YouTube channels it listed violated Ugandan laws and that the continued broadcast by the channels might cause economic sabotage and compromise Uganda’s national security.

“The broadcasts contain gruesome pictures including pictures of dead bodies, wounded victims of attacks and accidents, in a manner likely to cause public anxiety. Glorifies lawlessness and undermines public interest, confidence in the law and its enforcement in Uganda,” the letter reads.

Museveni thinks he can dictate everything everywhere just the same way he’s killing Ugandans just to cling to power.

Google has procedures to follow if anyone wished to have a certain YouTube channel(s) removed.

“We always follow local law, but it would have to be a valid court order if a government wants a channel pulled down. The letters just show what the UCC submitted to the Embassy; they are not court orders,” Ooko said.

A transparency report on YouTube community guidelines indicates that the site does not allow pornography, incitement to violence, harassment, or hate speech, and relies on a combination of people and technology to flag inappropriate content and enforce these guidelines.

The report adds that a YouTube channel is terminated if it accrues three warnings in 90 days, has a single case of severe abuse, or is determined to be wholly dedicated to violating the entity’s guidelines.

“Flags can come from our automated flagging systems, from members of the Trusted Flagger program (NGOs, government agencies, and individuals) or users in the broader YouTube community,” the page reads.

According to Robert Kirunda, a constitutional expert and a lecturer of Law at Makerere University, the UCC’s request in the middle of a presidential campaign is an attempt to limit online space for the musician turned politician.

“This is political, it’s not about business or registration. UCC gagged mainstream media and they thought that once you control radio and TV and say don’t air Bobi Wine rallies, you have solved the problem. But the complexities came when Bobi Wine supporters started using online channels to broadcast his messages. These channels are hard to regulate,” Kirunda said.

Kirunda’s sentiments were seconded by a popular Uganda-based Human rights lawyer, Nicholas Opiyo.

Nicholas Opiyo says that the letter by UCC is indicative that dictator Museveni doesn’t understand how big-tech companies such as Google operate.

“You can’t cite the UCC act and claim that these big tech companies violate these laws. Big Tech companies such as Google can act based on legitimate court orders. UCC should know that YouTube and other big tech companies are not Ugandan policemen,” Opiyo said.

This writer conducted Abdul Salam Waiswa, the head of Ugandan Legal and Compliance at UCC via phone for a response.

Waiswa told this writer that the listed channels have not registered as required by the law in Uganda.

For those of you who might be hearing this for the first time, UCC had early this year directed all online publishers to not only register but also pay taxes.

So, for someone like Museveni who has been ruling Uganda for almost 3 decades, doesn’t he have at least someone with a shred of brains to tell the old-man that it doesn’t require the intervention of Google to have the platforms registered?

Just for the heads up, the social media tax and draconian laws that Museveni is globally portraying his absurdity with will be implemented in Kenya come January 2021.

The Governor of Kisumu County Prof. Peter Anyang’ Nyong’o is a politically troubled man after he fell out with his key point men including Peter Ayuya, his former chief of staff and Senator Fred Outa who turned out to be a snitch.

The professor governor of Kisumu is also accused of not fulfilling his job promises to members of different larger clans of the lakeside county. The Kisumo, Kajulu and Kano clans whose kingpins are now regrouping to give the professor a lesson at the 2022 ballot are not a happy lot.

The KKK are at the neck of Governor Nyong’o who comes from the Seme clan in Kisumu rural but without a candidate in mind.

They have not resolved to back Kisumu Senator Fred Outa from Kano but complainants from Kano clan are accusing Nyong’o of denying them 50% share of the Kisumu County government.

If they had many in plum position at the county offices, they would find gaps to loot and threaten to withdraw their support for Nyong’o as they keep the county dwindling.

The Kano complainants are led by Senator Outa, a friend turned foe who is hiding behind corruption allegations to settle political scores with Prof. Nyong’o. Many senators who want to be governors always behave like Outa.

Shabir is fighting clan politics in his backyard where ‘pentagon’ has been formed by clan cocoons to dislodge him in 2022. He is not concerned with politics are the county’s top seat.

But Nyong’o became a governor because he ‘owns’ part of ODM which is popular in Luoland not because he enjoys good support in Kisumu County. He is powerful enough to force his way in like he did right from nominations where he was handed the certificate at a bushy village in Nyakatch.

The boastful governor also had a feeling that the former governor Jack Ranguma was an ‘ODM stranger’ leading his county.

Ranguma comes from the Kano clan and one of the Kisumu politicians who said he will support Kano’s own in 2022 when Raila Odinga had endorsed Nyong’o for a second term.

Ranguma is still eyeing the seat but he does not trust his brothers from Kano clan after the likes of Outa neglected him and stood with Nyong’o in 2017.

But KKK’s problem with the man from Seme is that Raila has ‘endorsed’ him for a second term.

Outa whose type of politics must also keep him around Raila Odinga to remain relevant can be compromised. Nyong’o is respected and listened to around Odinga when Outa can be ignored.

He may be on a warpath with Nyong’o’s government but the party can prevail upon him to slow down. If anything he worked with Nyong’o to form Team Kali that consisted of aspirants with ODM party tickets.

The senator is among the 2022 Kisumu gubernatorial aspirants who criticized Raila’s endorsement for Nyong’o. Outa said that the governor had planted goons to force ODM leader to endorse him for a second term.

The endorsement angered Outa to an extent that he held two meetings in Nairobi with his key from his larger Kano clan to counter the move.

The KKK onslaught comes at a time when Nyong’o is facing rebellion from Nyakach which vowed to block his second bid after he sacked seven committee members from region in his administration.

Nyong’o’s deputy Mathew Owili who hails from Nyakach was recently booed when he tried to tell his villagers that the area leaders met in September and resolved to support the governor for a second term.

Owili has portrayed the qualities of a weak leader who is being used to deliver messages to places where Nyong’o is met with hostility.

On this particular case he alluded that all leaders from the area including MCAs, Nyakach MP Aduma Owuor, church leaders, women and the youth met and endorsed Nyong’o for a second term.

Owili was also at odds with his Nyakach people when he failed to lobby for one of their own to be appointed as the county chairman of the public service board.

The position went to the Kano clan whose leaders are now out with political daggers to chop off the governor’s head.

Nyong’o dished the PSB chair position to a former teacher Babu Karan from as Nyakach people remained stranded with their former area MP Peter Odoyo who was later appointed Chief Adminstrative Secretary (CAS) in the Defence Ministry.

John Githongo, anti-corruption crusader

Many Kenyans saw theelephant.info grow in leaps and bounds after the NIS ouster of some writers who were attached to the Nation Media Group.

The writers who mostly penned articles for the Sunday nation left en masse sometime in March 2018 and soon theelephant.info began publishing their long mostly unedited articles that have attracted some pseudo-activists and some pseudo-intellectuals believing that their timid voices and shadowboxing corruption can change anything.

Well, there’s disquiet as some sections of the writers, mostly the Kikuyu hegemony, seem favoured by the editor and money organizer John Githongo, more than others.

When the blog began, writers were paid Sh30,000 per approved and published article; that was further reduced to Sh20k, and in December 2020, writers received an email telling them that they will henceforth receive Sh12k.

This has angered a section of writer who have knowledge that some writerts are not often affected by the salary cuts.

For example, the former World Bank economist David Ndii,  who is also a writer on the platform, earns Sh400k per month. His salary is never touched.

Around 9.00 Pm yesterday, Othaya Road Kilimani, our family was having end of year celebrations at our compound.  Police came around 70 in about 15 land cruisers.

They arrested all of them, took them to Muthangari police stations, put them in one cell. They assaulted ladies as per the videos and photos shared.  On realizing how they have brutalized them, they released them around 3. Am today. No OB booked no nothing.  They were demanding 20000 ksh but when they realized the damage they had done they had to release them.

They stole cameras and laptops.

A private event of about 45 attendees in Kileleshwa was raided by police officers at 9.05 pm Saturday, December 19th. The police whipped and injured some women and men before loading them into a police truck and carrying them to Muthangari police station.

15 land cruisers were deployed including a police saloon car and a large truck. All people were bundled on to one truck. There were about 150 officers all armed. The area is under Kileleshwa, but diverted to muthangari. Ladies were assaulted

On realising how they have brutalised them, they released them around 3 a.m today. The police demanded ksh 20000 unlawfully. Equipment ,laptops and cameras were confiscated.The victims are demanding justice .Kenyan police should stop being thieves.

The impeachment of corrupt anti-system governors Ferdinand Waititu of Kiambu and Mike Sonko of Nairobi coupled with the handshake politics, have changed the landscape of gubernatorial politics in Kenya.

Former Nairobi Governor Evans Kidero will not contest in a possible by-election to fill the top seat of Nairobi county that fell vacant after Sonko was impeached by the senate last week.

Kidero, now a former member and former financier of the ODM Party has shifted his gubernatorial ambitions to his home county of Homa Bay where he commands some small respect because he is filthy rich and corrupt like Kikuyus.

That’s the Homa bay vibe on the man who looted Nairobi County after grounding Mumias Sugar Company.

Kidero considered the bold move to walk out of Raila’s meaningless roof after he realized that the ODM leader who is in a handshake contract with Jubilee, had agreed to back a Kikuyu candidate to fill the seat left vacant after Sonko was kicked out.

He can’t go for anything less than a governor, so he has ditched Raila Odinga and his ODM Part too. He will now vie to become the next governor of Homa Bay county on a KANU party ticket.

The Homa Bay seat is expected to remain vacant in 2022 when the term of the incumbent Cyprian Awiti will expire.

ODM party diehards including party chairman John Mbadi and Woman Representative Gladys Wanga are also eyeing the seat.

The corrupt former governor thought it wise to ditch the disloyal Raila and back Senator Gideon Moi who is also handshake friendly and core member of the system.

Corrupt governors are making this sorry move to insulate themselves from anti-graft authorities who are on their necks.

Former Kiambu Governor Ferdinand Waititu has also ditched DP William Ruto for Gideon Moi.

Waititu was lured to join the powerful son of the former late President Daniel Moi by a Kanu party official George Wainaina who looted with Kidero at the city hall.

Both Kidero and Waititu are corrupt individuals who spend their days and nights in courts therefore backing an inner member of the system will help them can scare anti-graft officials away and afford them some sleeping and looting time.

The scheming Kikuyu community argued that they will be left with a shell of the rich city come 2022, so having the city will put them in a prime position since they will lose the presidency.

Raila who is desperate for the Mt Kenya support to be the next president of Kenya is giving in to all their demands.

Central Kenya also want their regional kingpins appointed in powerful cabinet positions including finance and infrastructure dockets.

But Kidero was a stranger in politics prior to 2013 when he only featured in cooperate frauds. He sailed through with Raila’s influence to become the first governor of Nairobi but lost to Sonko in 2017, since then his relationship with Odinga’s party has increasingly deteriorated.

Infact he financed ODM for influence meaning he stands no chance in Nairobi without a Raila or ODM support.

If anything, Kidero made it to ODM list of moles when he featured in the Kalausi grouping that was plotting to oppose Odinga in South Nyanza.

The tainted billionaire who is part of the pioneer governors who devolved corruption to the grass roots is also subject to the current political schemes on alliances occasioned by the over 4 million signatures that were recently collected in support of the BBI report.

Top leaders are restless over schemes to distribute seats in the BBI’s expanded executive with top aspirants in the coming 2022 presidential elections shaping their teams with former presidential aspirants, governors, senators and influential civil service officials.

DP William Ruto who will go for presidency has lined up former Kiambu governor William Kabogo, Makueni governor Kivutha Kibwana, Kwale governor Salim Mvurya, ex CS Mwangi Kiunjuri.

The hustlers’ team also includes Charles Nyachae, Tharaka Nithi senator Kithure Kindiki and Garissa Town MP Adan Duale.

Ruto is also courting Mudavadi for a power-sharing deals. The confused ANC leader is also in talks with President Uhuru Kenyatta and Gideon Moi over the same.

The DP is at the same time wooing Mt Kenya politicians who are not comfortable with the former Gatanga MP Peter Kenneth becoming the next region’s kingpin. PK is engaged in power sharing talks with Odinga.

His move has prompted the former Kiambu Governor William Kabogo to move too close to joining the DP’s camp with reports that Martha Karua is also swallowing pride to follow suit and counter Anne Waiguru.

Politicians who are desperate to hang around the handshake/system are trooping to Senator Gideon who only enjoys a big Moi name with inconsiderable political support.

The Baringo senator’ party is becoming the safe haven for politicians like Kidero and Waititu, bitter political rivals who faced off in Nairobi in 2013 as Moi struggles to up his bargaining base with ODM that views him as a possible running mate.

He has now succeeded in poaching two cons from Ruto and Raila who must face off in 2022.

Last week, a report emerged that hackers, probably from China, had been filching security camera footage from inside the African Union headquarters building in Ethiopia.

Several years ago, AU technicians discovered that the building’s Huawei-provided servers were daily exporting their data to Shanghai, and that the walls of the Chinese-built headquarters were peppered with listening devices.

It is a strange way for Beijing to treat a continent whose rulers have emerged as key backers of its international agenda. Yet the Chinese government’s spying, which almost certainly extends far beyond the African Union headquarters, may in fact be one of the reasons why African rulers are willing to defend Beijing’s increasingly indefensible actions.

Beijing’s opportunities for eavesdropping in Africa are vast. Chinese companies—many of which are state-owned, all of which are legally obliged to cooperate with the Chinese Communist Party on intelligence matters—have built at least 186 government buildings in Africa, including presidential residences, ministries of foreign affairs, and parliament buildings.

Huawei has built more than 70 percent of the continent’s 4G networks and at least fourteen intra-governmental ICT networks, including data centers in Kenya and Zambia that house the entirety of those governments’ records.

The report—now confirmed by two other media outlets—that broke the original story of the Chinese government’s AU spying demonstrates what Beijing can do with a structure one of its company builds.

The AU’s compromised ICT system was also provided by Huawei, whose equipment is often swiss chees-ed with security vulnerabilities that make them easily exploitable.

Given Huawei’s links to China’s Ministry of State Security, it beggars belief that Beijing lacks anything less than an excellent idea of how to access those backdoors.

Beijing has many reasons to take advantage of the spying opportunities its companies’ activities in Africa provides. It can eavesdrop on the sensitive conversations they have with their non-African counterparts, and the Chinese government might be able to gather useful economic information it can pass to its many companies operating on the continent.

Yet as the Chinese government becomes more aggressive internationally, it likely increasingly values the information it gathers in Africa for its use in maintaining and expanding African decisionmakers’ support for Beijing’s global agenda.

African states are consistent apologists for the Chinese regime’s oppression of its ethnic and religious minorities, vote frequently with Beijing at the United Nations (often in opposition to the United States), and usually back Chinese candidates vying for leadership of important international agencies.

Recent bombshell revelations demonstrate Beijing’s commitment to influencing foreign leaders. A Chinese spy named Christine Fang spent years developing personal ties with local politicians primarily from California.

Fang arranged donations for, and even managed to place at least one intern with, U.S. Rep. Eric Swalwell, who is now a current member of the sensitive House Intelligence Committee (Swalwell cut ties with Fang after receiving an FBI briefing about her spying).

In early December, Director of National Intelligence John Ratcliffe wrote of a Chinese influence campaign aimed at “several dozen“ Congressmen and Congressional aides.

China, in fact, targets Congress six times more frequently than does Russia, according to Ratcliffe. Meanwhile, a branch of the Chinese Communist Party known as the International Department, which is responsible for cultivating sympathy for the CCP with foreign politicians, claims to have ties with over 600 political groups in more than 160 countries.

African leaders, of course, do not need to be persuaded to accommodate China on certain issues. Many of their countries face a massive infrastructure gap, and Beijing is often happy to open its wallet for infrastructure projects. Affordable Chinese products, especially tech such as smartphones, are popular on the continent as well.

Yet the Chinese government spends a lot of time and energy trying to influence African leaders to support Beijing’s agenda at a level beyond what simple concern for their countries’ national interests would prompt. These charm campaigns include everything from bribery to throwing up flashy infrastructure projects during election times to lavishing “no-strings-attached” aid on rulers to feed their patronage networks.

The information that Beijing appears to be hoovering up daily is of obvious use for those kinds of influence operations. It could offer insights into an official’s habits, personality, and proclivities that would help Beijing effectively cajole or coerce him or her.

A key element of Christina Fang’s approach was to get as close as possible to her targets; electronic surveillance access to a target’s most sensitive haunts would offer the sort of extensive surveillance a human spy could only dream of.

China has built access to African leaders that will be impossible to roll back in the immediate term. Washington, however, can begin building a response that is as patient and far-seeing as China’s strategy has been. One element of that must be complicating what is currently Beijing’s almost unfettered surveillance access to Africa.

Deputy President William Ruto has said that the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI) has negatively taken the top priority in the country at the expense of the Jubilee development agenda.

Responding to claims by the chairman of Council of Governors Wycliffe Oparanya that a report on the revival of sugarcane factories in Western Kenya has been shelved, Dr. Ruto said the government has sorely put BBI on the centre stage instead of the promised development programs.

Speaking at Nakhwana grounds in Bumula constituency, Bungoma County, during the funeral service of Maurice Mabonga Wanjala, father to MP Mwambu Mabonga, the Deputy President noted that BBI has slowed down the Jubilee development agenda.

“The BBI team that includes Mr. Oparanya came and told us that there is an emergency that needed to be sorted out. That’s why the Jubilee development agenda including implementation of the sugar revival program has been abandoned,” said Dr. Ruto.

The deputy President said issues of Nzoia and Mumias could have been addressed long ago were it not for the ‘urgency’ of BBI.

“The Big Four agenda that has been shelved, because more focus is now on BBI, was aimed at addressing key issues affecting Kenyans,” said Dr. Ruto.

He said it was time to change the economic trajectory of the country from only a few individuals and companies benefitting at the expense of millions of Kenyans.

“We are now in a situation where the economy trickles down but we want a bottom-up approach for our economy,” said Dr Ruto.

Also present were Senate Speaker Ken Lusaka, Governors Wycliffe Oparanya (Kakamega), Wycliffe Wangamati (Bungoma), MPs Moses Mabonga ( Bumula), Wafula Wamunyinyi (Kanduyi), John Waluke (Sirisia), Eseli Simiyu (Tongaren), Catherine Wambilianga (Women Rep, Bungoma), Benjamin Washiali (Mumias East)  Emmanuel Wangwe (Navakholo)and Fred Kapondi (Mt Elgon).

Others were Malulu Injendi (Malava), Didmus Barasa (Kimilili), Janet Nangabo (Women Rep, Trans Nzoia), Sakwa Bunyasi (Nambale), Chris Wamalwa (Kiminini), Alfred Agoi (Sabatia), Charles Gimose (Hamisi), Caleb Kositany (Soy), Caleb Hamisi (Saboti), Dan Wanyama (Webuye West), Beatrice Adagala (Women Rep, Vihiga) and Geoffrey Otsosi (nominated).

The Deputy President said the Jubilee’s Big Four agenda- manufacturing, housing, food security, and access to healthcare were aimed at transforming the lives of Kenyans.

A 24 year of University student was on Saturday evening found hanging from a rope in their home compound in Enabelbel area in Narok North.

The body of the deceased, Elvis Soit Loloiba who was a third-year student at Moi University`s faculty of Science and Technology was found by the caretaker Alex Ngoilelo as their mother who is a serving police officer was away on duty.

Confirming the incident, Narok County Police Commander Mr. John Kizito Mutoro said initial investigations at the scene show the deceased could have taken rat poison before hanging himself as a used packet of the lethal stuff was found in the house.

The family and the community were this morning trying to come to terms with the sudden death of their loved whose young promising life has been nipped in the bud.

The body of the deceased has been moved to Narok Referral Hospital mortuary pending postmortem and further investigation into the incident as the family prepares for the burial.

According to reports; nearly 20 university students across the country committed suicide in the country between 2014 and 2018. Sadly, the trend seems to have hit a new high especially with hard economic times and advent of Coronavirus pandemic.

A report titled; Effects of Covid-19 on mental health and compiled by a multi-agency on coronavirus response reveals that since March this year, more than 1.9 million Kenyans have suffered mental stress occasioned by the adverse effects of Covid-19, including job losses and deaths.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), about 800,000 people die from suicide each year (that is one person every 40 seconds), majority of them aged 15-29.

Through her social media pages, the former rapper who jumped ship from her failed music career and hang on to some TV hosting job at a low-tier githeri station recently documented her Christmas getaway trip to the coastal town of Mombasa with all sorts of corny captions and hashtags which clearly projected she was not very acquainted with flying business class.

They are subjected to whatever the adults in their lives expose them to. So they get what they get and that becomes their foundation.

If a child grows up around girls like Shakila that’s what they will think is acceptable and they will see it as something to strive for.

Police officers in Migori have arrested a female suspect following the controversial death of a 59-year-old man in Ntimaru sub-county.

Area police boss John Losia said that on the evening of December 26, 2020, the deceased person had checked into a room at an unnamed lodging in Kuria West, Migori County while in the company of the suspect.

It is reported that before they checked in, the suspect convinced the man to gulp down some libido booster and hours later, he began to complain he was feeling unwell.

The female suspect then immediately informed the hotel management and the deceased was rushed to Mother and Child Health Center where he was later pronounced dead while still undergoing treatment.

Kabaka’s spirit lives on…
