You’ve just noticed companies are laying off staff due to the tough economic situation in the country.
Telkom’s merger with airtel will more than 500 staff go home. EABL is also ending a lot of people home. The economy is not good in Kenya.
Media houses have been the victims recently, Kenya Red Cross Owned Switch TV Kenya fired 16 people in a restructuring process. There’s fear that Citizen TV and KTN and NTV will be following suit.
You just saw a propaganda on top 100 journalists in the country, this is the truth, that was a paid scheme to convince employers that some of those on the list are still worthy and best in the country yet their days are numbered in the institution especially Citizen TV which has factions from those who came from NTV and the old lot.
There’s no newsroom unity, according to our source it’s bad. Some journalists haven’t even finished a year with the station and are already top 100 in the country, like Mukami Wambora who’s the daughter to Embu Governor Martin Wambora.
Citizen’s wage bill is said to be the highest nearing Safaricom PLC. They took everyone and talks are that the revenues are reducing and the owners are cracking the whip in coming weeks. As much as some are trying to push the propaganda of being the best in the industry, some journalists are worried of their jobs with the fact that the TV market is not all about the big boys. New entrants in the market like Switch TV are making strides, maisha magic also doing well with its youthful content. Digital migration is still taking casualties.
KTN will soon be getting rid of some elements after a leadership restructuring that saw former managing editor Kizito Namulanda as the head of the newsroom in a new convergence system.
They are bracing for impact as top management says KTN is bringing back its old folks who will steer the station back to glory.
The introduction of Ellen Wanjiru who is the ME was the biggest mistake according to KTN staff and other bootlickers like the faded Haasan Jumaa who has refused to leave the station due to conform zone insecurities.
NTV has seen its top editors and directors quit in the recent past and rumours have it that the station will be tightening their grip on convergence which is shaky by introducing new faces and releasing the old brats who have neo colonialism aspects in their operation.
