Maono Lands Limited: A Story of Deception and Fraud

Kinyua Wairatu

Maono Lands Limited Director Kinyua Wairatu

Dandora-based businessman Kinyua Wairatu, a man of questionable character, has been running a long-standing scam through his briefcase company, Maono Lands Limited.

Despite claiming to offer “simplified, rewarding, and secure” land investments on their website, Wairatu has been preying on unsuspecting buyers, only to sell them hot air.

Wairatu, who has been known to market his business on local Kikuyu radio stations, deceitfully presents his company as being founded on strong Christian values, with God as the “senior-most partner”.

However, as one witness attested, this could not be further from the truth.

“Warn Kenyans to run away from these Maono Lands cons. My plots are in Nyahururu Ngarua phase 3 yet they are selling phase 5. Why keep on selling the lands yet he has Issues with phase 3?”

Part 1: Maono Lands Limited is conning Investors

Wairatu is a deeply arrogant and foul-mouthed individual who believes himself to be above the law.

He insults everyone and behaves as if he can get away with anything, thanks to his supposed deep connections within law enforcement and other agencies.

Following our first exposé on Wairatu, he began blocking his clients on social media.

“I invested with Maono Lands Limited, now it’s been 1 year and I’m still asking for my title after being given fake promises. He blocked me. I bought 2 plots in Nyahururu in 2021. I bought 2 plots 50 by 100 each 150k plus 30k for the title, a total of 330k. When we ask about the title, they give you fake promises and when you continue asking for it, the next minute you are blocked. We are so many, we have created a WhatsApp group for those who bought and not yet given titles,” one victim shared.

Part 2: Maono Lands limited goes on blocking spree after Cyprian Nyakundi exposé

The use of fake promises and blocking clients when they ask for their title deeds is a clear indication of Wairatu’s deceitful tactics.

Most of the investors who purchased properties from Maono Lands were lured in by aggressive social media marketing and influencers.

Much like in the Lesedi Developers saga that went viral earlier this year, Wairatu baited his clients by hiring the services of popular Kikuyu musicians like Karangu Muraya to market the plots for sale.

This is a tactic that has been used by many unscrupulous individuals in the real estate industry, taking advantage of the trust and influence of these public figures to attract unsuspecting customers.

There are many victims who have been affected by Wairatu’s fraudulent activities. Some even formed a WhatsApp group to seek justice.

The latest to fall prey to Wairatu’s scam is a buyer who purchased a plot of land from Maono Lands Limited in August 2021.

Despite being promised a title deed by the end of that year, the buyer was met with stalling tactics and empty promises from Wairatu throughout 2022.

On December 17th, 2022, the victim went to Wairatu’s office in the CBD and demanded either the title deed or a refund of their money.

Wairatu called the police from Kamukunji Police Station, and the victim was instructed to go to the station for further discussion. In the presence of the police, Wairatu agreed to refund the victim’s money by January 17th, 2023, a commitment he reportedly made in writing, as shown in the documents provided to us by the victim.

However, when the victim went to Wairatu’s offices on January 17th, 2023, they found him unavailable.

Wairatu requested a meeting the following day at the police station, where he presented the victim with one title deed and refused to honour the refund agreement. When the police attempted to contact Wairatu, he was not reachable, and he did not respond to the victim’s calls.

It is suspected that Wairatu could be working with powerful cartels within the lands ministry and law enforcement agencies.

Wairatu is nothing less than a criminal who should be rotting behind bars, but instead is using his connections to continue to swindle innocent Kenyans.

Authorities must bring an end to this criminal’s reign of deception and fraud.

This latest incident involving Maono Lands Limited is just one example of the many land-related crimes happening in Nairobi.

This month alone, multiple separate incidents have been reported, including a dangerous cartel headed by city politicians and music industry celebrities who are daring and brazen in their actions.

For instance, on Sunday, police arrested Jackson Mwangi Wambui, a man who claimed to be the Karen Police Station Deputy OCS, and one Peter Munene Kamau, after they were caught on video attempting to access a white man’s land in Karen.

The stand-off, which occurred on January 18, 2023, was a clear case of a planned land grab, which is unfortunately common in schemes like this.

Many expiring land leases given by the colonial government in Karen estate, Nairobi are attracting scavengers who prey on elderly white people with no known family members.

Even Nairobi Gubernatorial candidate Agnes Kagure is said to have swindled land worth Sh600 million from the late British businessman Roger Bryan Robson.

This is not just a problem of a single company but is a bigger problem of land grabbing in Nairobi.

Given this pattern of land-related cases, it would not be a surprise to find out that Maono Lands Limited is also selling grabbed plots of land.

This blog’s Chief Editor Cyprian Nyakundi has called for more victims of Maono Lands Limited to come forward with their testimonies.

By speaking out, they will be helping to build a strong case against Wairatu and possibly trigger his prosecution and subsequent jailing.

It is imperative that we do not allow thugs like Wairatu to keep getting away with such heinous crimes.

The victims of this scam deserve justice and it is our duty as a responsible media outlet to ensure that their voices are heard.

This blog will be closely following this story, providing updates to our readers until its conclusion.

We cannot stand idly by while criminals like Wairatu continue to prey on innocent victims.

It is time for him to be held accountable for his actions.
