PHOTO CAPTION: A fleet of tourist vehicles scrambling to give sightseers a better view at the Maasai Mara Game Reserve

A rather uncouth incident recorded at the Maasai Mara National Reserve on Friday, October 28, is the latest topic of discussion on social media.

The two-minute clip which first appeared on Twitter shows a fleet of loud Toyota Landcruisers rudely encroaching on wildlife-free space just to give tourists a better sight of cheetahs killing their prey.

With total disregard for park rules and regulations, the naughty drivers carelessly hoot and speed towards the scene of the hunt, which sends the predators into a state of discomfort from the loud and sudden movements.

Netizens have angrily reacted to the video, with some calling for the tour companies responsible to be penalized for causing disturbance to wildlife.

“This is why wildlife should be in the ministry of the environment. It not always about money,” one Kenyan said.

“Why would human beings behave in an uncouth manner? Why destruct such a natural event by hooting and suddenly swarming the cheetahs during a hunt?” another asked.

“I understand the need to experience the natural nature of the wild, but am here wondering how we differ from these animals. Very disappointed by the acts of the tour drivers,” noted another.

Although most of the backlash was directed at the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS), some argued that the Maasai Mara is not a park but a game reserve, hence falls under a different jurisdiction – the County government of Narok.

County rangers are therefore responsible for enforcing game rules.

As seen from the comments above, this is just one of the many alarming videos which have emerged from the Mara this past week.

Capitalism is taking our tourism to the pits.

We need legislation on the carbon footprint in game parks and reserves.

Even wild animals deserve their space.
