Three people, including an 11-year-old, have been confirmed dead, while two others are nursing serious injuries at the Kenyatta University Teaching Referral and Research Hospital (KUTTRH) after they were involved in a freak road accident on Eastern bypass in Ruiru.
The Sunday morning accident reportedly occurred near Green Valley Estate after a speeding Toyota Prado hit a tuk-tuk which then rammed into the matatu in front of it, leaving the helpless passengers sandwiched between the two vehicles.
The three deceased are an 11-year-old, a 43-year-old female, and a man aged 29 years.
Their bodies were taken to KUTTRH Funeral Home.
The driver identified as Cosmas Mutembei was arrested by police and underwent alcohol tests to ascertain whether he was drunk driving.
In a video doing rounds on social media, Mutembei appears extremely intoxicated when Kamakis residents confronted him for causing the accident.
“You have killed six people! Have you ever seen a dead person? They are there! you have killed there,” a witness in the video clip was heard telling the driver.
Ruiru Sub-County Police Commander Cecilia Kemboi says the recklessly driven vehicle rolled over after ramming into the two vehicles.
Our inquiries have since established that Mr. Mutembei is a Nairobi-based businessman who works as an automotive dealer at Ziara Sez Motors.
He is popular within the city’s circles for his love to flex his “big machines”.
His social media posts portray a man with a taste for soft life and who enjoys showing off his opulence.
In the wake of increased accidents along the newly expanded highway, Kemboi appealed to the Kenya National Highway Authority (KeNHA) to erect speed bumps along it to control motorists and avert further accidents.
