Officials in charge of the Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) impounds department have faced accusations of unjustly profiting from levying exorbitant fines on seized vehicles.
For instance, all trucks parked in the yard accumulate a bill of $50 (almost Sh6,000) per day.
Note that they charge this on top of existing impound fees, so by the time owners return to cash out their assets, figures will have climbed to tens of thousands.
Most end up abandoning their trucks at the agency, which are later cheaply auctioned as part of their “surplus and unserviceable” items.
A perfect win-win situation for the greedy commissioners.
“Hi, Nyakundi,
I would like to raise an issue about KeNHA exploiting truck owners.
I was there some time back, and I realized kuna some trucks are left there by owners juu wameshindwa kulipa fines na hata by the time wanapata hizo pesa kuna parking fee ya $50 per day, so still it is useless to go pay the money.
My concern is why should one pay $50 per day truck ikiwa held kwa yard?
And they don’t give security because there is a lot of theft there,” the source writes.
