CAPTION: Child Welfare Society of Kenya chair Shakila Abdalla

A group of former employees at the Child Welfare Society of Kenya (CWSK) have come out to protest their sacking from the state corporation.

Speaking anonymously to cnyakundi.com, one of the jobholders that were unfairly shown the door over nine months ago cited heavy irregularities in the layoff process that was overseen by CEO Irene Murithi.

Up to date, the more than 100 suspended workers are yet to receive their dues.

Strong concerns have also been raised regarding poor working conditions at the organization whose Patron is none other than President Uhuru Kenyatta.

Corruption, tribalism, and nepotism are said to be the order of the day.

Despite receiving millions of funds from the national government, it is purported that people from certain communities are granted an unfair advantage during recruitment.

Rude HR consultant Gichuhi, Maina of Finance, Deputy CEO Peter Githinji, Purity Kinoti (works with consultant Jotham) and Mercella Obala (still of HR) are also adversely mentioned as perpetrators of the evils.

“Jambo Mkubwa?

I am a former employee at Child Welfare Society of Kenya (CWSK).

They decided to lay off close to 100 staff without paying them their dues.

The organization receives funds from the government but only employs people from GEMA community.

Other tribes are sacked mercilessly.

It is a state corporation but only one tribe gets employed there.

One can be on internship or probation for 4 years then when they are called for an interview, they are fired immediately.

Majority were fired in June last year.

Even those who were on the contract were fired.

CEO Irene Murithi has been on that docket for over 20 years without election or appointment.

Child Welfare Society of Kenya CEO Irene Murithi

I’m sending you their names.

Rude HR consultant Gichuhi, Maina of Finance, Deputy CEO Peter Githinji, Purity Kinoti (works with consultant Jotham) and Mercella Obala (still of HR) seconded by the Ministry of Labour.

Our demands are:
1. That we be reinstated
2. That we be paid our dues
3. That we be told the mistakes we did.
4. The Child Welfare Society of Kenya (CWSK) explains to Kenyans why they only employ Meru, Kikuyu and Embu yet they receive close to Sh1billion after every financial year.
5. Explain subject interns on 4-year probation then fail to employ them, instead of firing them by only giving them allowances which are eventually peanut.

During enlistment, we were told that probation was to take only 6 months but it didn’t happen (especially for NYS personnel).

We were laid off despite Uhuru’s directives to absorb them into government departments.

To make matters worse, Uhuru is the patron of CWSK and has never commented on the suffering of employees.

No mistake was done to merit this massive layoff without any pay.

I have a termination letter with only two sentences,” our source writes.

The Child Welfare Society of Kenya is a State Corporation for the care, protection, welfare and adoption of children under the Ministry of Labour, and Social Security Services.

It is the oldest adoption society in the country and has often been marred by controversy.

Sometime in 2019, CWSK Chairperson Shakila Abdalla was faced with child neglect allegations.

This followed a shocking exposé on child abuse, mistreatment, poor living conditions and exploitation at the agency asked with caring for and protecting the welfare of adopted children.

The investigative piece divulged how CWSK situated along Lang’ata Road was using vulnerable children for profit, subjecting them to more misery and minting millions in the process.

Days later CEO Irene Mureithi was sent on compulsory leave over her apparent impropriety and exploitation the of children she was supposed to protect.
