The senate has adjourned for the 10th time due to the stalemate on the revenue allocation formula. The move to adjourn the senate came after senators united and voted for adjournment following the arrests of three senators.
Senators Cleophas Malala of Kakamega, Steve Lelegwe of Samburu and Christopher Langat of Bomet were arrested on monday.
Speaker of the senate Hon. Ken Lusaka described the arrests as harassment, pushing them to stick together. “The chair of the security committee should convene and get all parties to give information on whereabouts of the senators and report back on the progress,” he said.
The Leader of Majority Samuel Poghisio supported the adjournment motion as he called on the arrested senators to be sincere on their whereabouts and the revenue bill.
“I would be concerned about members arrested but i think that the opportunity given to speak will be better used if we agree not to call the government all sorts of names,” Poghisio said.
Minority Leader Senator James Orengo urged the senators to stand with each other as he called on the speaker to to summon Interior CS Fred Matiang’i, Police IG, DCI and AG to appear before the senate’s Security Committee in the next one hour and report back at 2.30pm.
Other Senators also added their voice on the matter as they demanded the release of their colleagues before they continue with the debate on the divisive county revenue sharing formula.
Initially the senators were considering a special sitting adjourned until their colleagues were present in the chamber.
Senator Langat was arrested minutes to 11.30 am on Monday morning at his house in Nyayo Estate, Embakasi and taken to Embakassi Police Station.
