Police To Add More Charges To Mike Sonko

The National Police Service (NPS) has said that they will prefer more charges on the embattled Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko.

‘During the arrest he became abusive, unruly and violent in an attempt to resist hence obstructing police officers from the lawful execution of their duties. In the process, he assaulted and injured the senior police officer leading the team and damaged media equipment. Consequent to these acts of lawlessness against lawful police action, the police will prefer assault and other related charges against the governor’, the statement said.

Sonko who was arrested yesterday had been remanded pending bail hearing on Monday.

The illiterate governor was arrested following revelations that he irregularly awarded tenders worth over Ksh300 million.

Below is the full statement from the police:

On 6th December 2019, the Director of Public Prosecutions issued a directive to have the Governor of Nairobi Mike Sonko and his co-accused arrested and arraigned before court, the police caught up with the Governor at Voi, along the Nairobi Mombasa Highway.

During the arrest he became abusive, unruly and violent in an attempt to resist hence obstructing police officers from the lawful execution of their duties. In the process, he assaulted and injured the senior police officer leading the team and damaged media equipment.

Consequent to these acts of lawlessness against lawful police action, the police will prefer assault and other related charges against the governor. We would also wish to inform the public that we have reports that a group of individuals is mobilising to cause civil unrest. The general public is therefore warned that persons intending to assemble, demonstrate, or picket must do so with strict adherence to the law.

Additionally, we wish to assure the public that the matter will be processed in accordance with the law and Kenyans should remain calm and not be intimidated by the social media messages in circulation.
