Danson Muchemi the chief executive officer of Jambopay and director of Web Tribe Ltd has also been named among those the office of Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) wants charged concerning multi-million tender scandals at the Nairobi County Government.
The Governor Mike Sonko was arrested yesterday on recommendations of the DPP for the loss of over Ksh300 million at the county.
Two years ago, Mike Sonko, then the governorship Aspirant and a formidable opponent to the the sitting Governor Evans Odhiambo Kidero had raised alarm over missing Ksh1 billion.
In 2017 Sonko said, ‘Governor Evans Kidero is has presided over the looting and fleecing of City Residents. At least Khs1 billion has been lost through Jambo Pay since he assumed office in 2013’.
Jambo Pay, a Web Tribe company was mentioned in other scandals during Kidero’s time.
The former Auditor-General Edward Ouko in his audit found out that Jambo Pay had been selected by the county to collect its revenues despite charging higher for such services against other cheaper firms Virtual Mobile and Craft Silicon.
Ouko had concluded that 4.5 per cent of all transactions retained by JamboPay were too high compared to what the Kenya Revenue Authority charges. Virtual Mobile and Craft Silicon had bidded with a charge of 2.5 per cent transaction cost.
It was alleged that in order to get the contract, though their prices was higher than the other two forms, Danson Muchemi had taken a bribe of Ksh10 million to Kidero. In the 4.5 per cent of charges, Kidero used to get 2 per cent and Web Tribe retains the rest.
To fool auditors, the original documents had shown that the company had bidded with a charge of 1.25 per cent. This was false representation and criminal.
In Mike Sonko’s time, the thieving aided by Danson Muchemi’s Web Tribe Limited has continued unabated.
So, yesterday’s arrest and detention of Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko awaiting trial is about an irregular procurement and payments amounting to Ksh 357, 390,299 million, where the governor is said to have received some money wired back into his account. Web Tribe Limited was also mentioned among those that benefited in these irregular procurements.
