Panic erupted in Nairobi’s Upper Hill district on Sunday night as flames engulfed the Old Mutual Towers shortly after a celebratory fireworks display to usher in the new year.

The cause of the fire visible from several kilometers away was not immediately known but initial reports suggest it may be linked to the pyrotechnics.
Photos and videos which quickly went viral on social media showed thick plumes of smoke obscuring the upper floors of the building, making it difficult to assess the extent of the damage.
