Residents of Greatwall Estate are up in arms over the lack of clean water in their homes and infiltration of AirBNBs used for sex work within the estate.

The estate constructed by Erdemann Property Limited have always been at the centre of constroversy.
In 2019, we highlighted the issue of lack of clean water, which the estate’s management has not yet fixed as per recent revelations.
Water is an expensive commodity at GreatWall Gardens. Some residents pay over 18k for water per month.
Erdemann Property Limited was also sanctioned by National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) for building too close to the London Distillers Kenya Limited (LDK), an alcoholic drinks factory in Athi River.
The real estate firm used LDK as a scape goat for all the ills that the residents are facing at GreatWall Gardens estate.

LDK was the first entrant into the space contested by Erdemann Limited and has operated in the place for so long. By granting the permit to construct at a ‘industrial area’, National Construction Authority and NEMA erred.
Breathing problems
On top of the water woes, residents of GreatWall estate have also been affected by the smoke coming from factories around the area. This is especially rampant in Phase 3 of the housing project.
As per documents from the Environmental Tribunal, Erdemann has been barred from constructing Phase 3, but buoyed by kickbacks and proximity to Uhuru Kenyatta’s state house and riding on the pale horse, then known as Big Four Agenda, they went Ahead.
The construction of over six hundred housing units went ahead in the area, which is an industrial complex.
Kenyans must also style up and stop buying cheap things.

Being in Machakos County, that has neither a sewerage system nor a piped water infrastructure, the residents of GreatWall Athiriver will continue languishing in poverty-like conditions, as pertains to water.
As for the sex workers masquerading as AirBNBs, the issue is a moral one.
It can be tackled by Sections 153 and 154 Penal Code, only if the residents establish that some people are profiting from prostitution.
