West Mugirango Member of Parliament (MP), Steve Mogaka, has raised concerns over the alleged disappearance of Sh17 million meant for the Ting’a-Igenaitambe road.
In a letter addressed to various investigating and assets recovery agencies, the MP has requested answers on the whereabouts of the missing funds.
According to Mogaka, the money was allocated in the 2021/2022 financial year for the opening, grading, gravelling and culvert construction of the road by the Kenya Rural Roads Authority (KeRRA).
However, the MP claims that the funds have vanished, and he has asked the relevant agencies to investigate and audit all KERRA projects undertaken in the same financial year.
Worth noting is that KERRA Director General is Philemon Kandie, who has strong political ties to KANU Chairman, Gideon Moi.
The agencies that Mogaka has requested to investigate the matter include the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC), the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP), the Assets Recovery Agency (ARA) and the Auditor General.
The MP has urged the agencies to recover or prosecute those responsible for the disappearance of the public funds before the road maintenance for the 2023 financial year begins.
This latest KERRA scandal directly implicates Kandie, who is responsible for overseeing activities at the authority.
The MP’s call for investigations and audits into KERRA’s projects in the 2021/2022 financial year should take into account Kandie’s role in the disappearance of the funds.
As the saying goes, “fish rots from the head”, and Kandie is at the top of the chain of command at KERRA.
He should be held accountable for the missing millions and appropriate action is taken to restore public confidence in the management of public funds.
