A woman behind bars
A source has informed this blog that women at Embakasi Police Station in Nairobi are being subjected to severe sexual abuse and exploitation while in custody.
The women’s cell at the police station, unlike the men’s cell, lacks an internal latch, leaving the women exposed and vulnerable to sexual assault by male suspects who are able to freely enter the cell.
The lack of basic safety measures has resulted in a pattern of male suspects preying on women in custody, perpetrating sexual violence and exploitation with impunity.
The fact that women are being subjected to sexual abuse while in the care of the very institution tasked with protecting their rights is a gross violation of human dignity and a breach of trust.
Furthermore, steps must be taken to ensure that all police stations across Kenya are equipped with the necessary safety measures to protect the rights of all individuals in custody.
We call on the government to take immediate action and bring the perpetrators of these heinous crimes to justice.
We will continue to follow this developing story and bring updates as they become available.
