Over 700 Nairobi City County askaris have been left jobless after Governor Johnson Sakaja failed to fulfill his promise of absorbing them into the new government following the expiration of the Nairobi Metropolitan Services (NMS) reign.

The askaris, who were previously employed by the NMS, have been working for the County Government since NMS left, and the new City Hall boss had promised to absorb him into the new government.

During this time, they have been posted on “special duties” without pay and have been praised for their hard work and efforts in improving the city.

Last Sunday, during a special duty in Lenana, Governor Sakaja told the askaris that he was aware of their situation and that they should be patient and keep working.

However, just a few days later, they received the memo of their termination, leaving them confused and upset.

The askaris, who are mostly learned and had received training in human rights and made significant contributions to the County Government through their professionalism and handling of their duties.

Despite their efforts, they feel that they have been treated unjustly and are now left without any means of supporting themselves.

The askaris are now calling for justice and for Governor Sakaja to fulfill his promise and absorb them into the new government as previously promised.

They feel that they have been let down by the government and are struggling to understand why they have been treated this way.

This situation raises questions about the commitment of Sakaja’s government to its employees and the state of their job security, considering what is happening to their colleagues.

The askaris are calling for their voices to be heard and for their grievances to be addressed.
