Adil Khawaja Joins Safaricom As Director

Safaricom PLC has announced the appointment of distinguished lawyer Mr Adil Arshed Khawaja (MBS) as a director in the leading telecommunications firm. 

In a press statement issued on Thursday night, the company noted they ascended Khawaja to the position on 22nd December 2022 which was later approved by the Board of Directors on January 5th, 2023, subject to regulatory assent.

Mr. Khawaja is a highly esteemed Advocate of the High Court of Kenya with over 30 years’ work experience in the legal profession. 

He is recognized as a leading name in the Kenyan legal profession and has been globally recognized in various practice groups as one of the most sought-after lawyers in Kenya. 

In recognition of his positive contribution to the country, Khawaja was recently awarded the Moran of the Order of the Burning Spear (MBS) by the President of the Republic of Kenya. 

Mr. Khawaja currently serves as the Managing Partner at Dentons Hamilton Harrison & Mathews, the oldest law firm in Kenya, established in 1902. 

Khawaja holds board positions in various companies across various markets. He currently serves on various boards which include Rhino Ark Charitable Trust, Al Futtaim Avtomotive-CMC Motors Group Limited and Atva Enkop Africa Limited. 

He previously served as a director of KCB Bank Group from 2012 and was elected the first chairman of KCB Bank Kenya limited from 2016 until 2020 when his tenure ended. 

He has also served as a director on the board of Kenya Power & Lighting Company and as a Trustee of the Kenya Wildlife Service. 

Khawaja began shaping his impeccable career in law in 1990 when he enrolled for his LLB Hons which he attained in 1993.

He was also enrolled at the Hamilton Harrisons and Mathews’ law firm as a trainee till 1994 when he did his diploma in law at the Kenya School of Law. 

In 1995, he was promoted to associate at the Hamilton Harrisons and Mathews, a position he held for five years before rising to the position of managing partner at Dentons Hamilton Harrison & Mathews. 

Khawaja remains one of Kenya’s top legal heads with respect to real estate, project planning, and environmental law. 

In 2018, chambers global describe Khawaja as practical, efficient, and one who caters to every legal need because of his ability to deliver tailor-made solutions within a short period of time. 

In 2001, the chief executive officer at the Hamilton Harrisons & Mathews named him the partner and served in that position till 2013.

Prior to that, Khawaja was also the designated scrutineer of elections at the Law Society of Kenya. 

It was during his stint at the LSK that the body seconded Khawaja to the Judiciary Committee tasked with the renovations that gave commercial courts at Milimani a facelift. 

He holds Masters Degree in Law from The University of Nairobi, a prestigious university in Kenya that ranks 7 among the top ten universities in Africa (according to the African Exponent).  

Even though Khawaja has not made public most of his sources of income, we can rank him based on visual approximation. 

Adil Khawaja Net worth is estimated in billions, if not hundreds of millions.

In giving back to society, Khawaja runs a duly registered foundation (Adil Khawaja Foundation) that is involved in community work and offers pro bono services. 

Adil has been working in cooperation with the UNEP finance and administration manager Shakira Adil in making sure that the foundation’s visions are fulfilled.

  • Member of the National Environment Council under the National Environmental Management and Co-ordination Act, 2005 – 2009
