We shall keep on reporting what Kenyans are going through while trying to seek service from the National Police service.
Police corruption is a form of police misconduct in which law enforcement officers abuse their power for personal gain.
In the Kenyan NPS, this type of corruption involves one or a group of officers.
The deeply masterminded internal police corruption at NPS is a challenge to public trust, cohesion of departmental policies, human rights, and legal violations involving serious consequences.
We can not independently measure the level of corruption in a country. Surveys of police officers, citizens, and businesses can be used to provide estimates on levels of corruption.
Interior CS Kithure Kindiki and IG Koome need to work on reforming their uniformed boys and girls in order to restore public trust.
From what we are receiving from the members of the public most if not all Police Commissions are complicit in the same cover-ups, often to hide internal and departmental problems, both from the public view and also from inter-departmental reviews and investigations.
At present, there are more than 570 case files that are awaiting determination by the ODPP following investigations by IPOA. Another 175 cases, also investigated by IPOA are at various stages of litigation in courts of law.
“I believe that henceforth, the guiding frameworks will positively impact on the decisions made in the execution of criminal proceedings, quality of prosecutions and enhance prosecutorial accountability,” Independent Policing and Oversight Authority Chairperson Anne Makori has noted.
We continue share what Kenyans are going through in the hands of the corrupt officers running public police stations as corruption dens.
“Hi Nyakundi,
We had an accident a few months ago a few kms from the Tatu city area with a friend of mine, gari iliingia kwa ditch and within minutes police at Ruiru had come with their own breakdown.
Instead of them helping out, they took us to Ruiru police station where we thought we had gone to record a statement and acquire an abstract for the purposes of insurance. Ghafla bin vuu, kufika kwa station tukatoleshwa viatu na mishipi and we were directed to the cells for a crime that we drove carelessly and ‘intentionally’ got to a ditch.
They couldnt listen any of us, the sad bit we found a number of petty offenders who complained about the mistreatment at the station(some had stayed at the cells for days without being produced at the courts). Around 11 pm one of the askaris came with two buckets full of cold water akamwaga kwa floor, mehn, we spent the whole night standing. We were interchanging legs juu ya kuchoka mazee.
Now asubuhi is when we got more wonders, without bargaining we had to pay for the breakdown(15k not negotiable) which we later discovered ni ya mmoja wao, and ya chai to write a good report to insurance na top up ya mkubwa.
Desperate us, we had no option. Within a night, we had coughed like 45 gees at Ruiru Police station, note, for a self-involving accident and not that we had taken Booz.
