Friends and colleagues of a Nyeri-based female biker, Carol Ian, have launched an online petition to protest what they term an unfair arrest and detention on false drug charges.

According to the petition, law enforcement officers raided Ms. Carol’s home, where she resides with her elderly mother, Veronica, on Tuesday, 27, November 2022, on suspicion that she was in possession of contraband, without a search warrant.

The police officers allegedly accused her of “suspiciously riding superbikes with a backpack”, which they used as an excuse to storm into the compound.

Fearing for her safety, she decided to document her ordeal on Facebook LIVE.

Those pushing the petition say that no drugs were found during the raid, adding that the incident not only left Ms. Carol and her mother traumatized but also baldy injured her reputation.

They describe her as a “very resourceful member” of their community.

“She’s one of the most well-known female bikers in East Africa.

She’s demonstrated that passion for motorcycles, if done well, can make a difference and inspire many.

Riding the most powerful superbike (1443cc) regularly on Kenyan roads with a good safety record for so many years is no small fete either.

Of course, it has attracted her to loads of attention including from our current president and that makes a few people choose to hate,” an update on the petition reads in part.

They arrested the two without contraband and later arraigned them in court for “obstruction” and “assault”.

The two were charged separately with two different case numbers, instead of jointly, despite everything having arisen from the same incident.

Her friends say this is a deliberate attempt to “dilute” their defence.

As things stand, the two are currently in remand at Kingongo Prison in Nyeri, awaiting a pre-trial on 7th February 2023.

The court set a cash bail for their release at Sh300k and Sh100k for Ms. Carol and Ms. Veronica, respectively.

They also inexplicably failed to issue them an option to post a bond with sureties.
