Hello Nyakundi.
We have concerns regarding Kenya Railways’ new SGR management. They started taking over on 1/3/2021 and so far they have taken 3 departments that they can barely manage.
The cancellation of meal allowances and overtime payments is the major issue for now. We work 26 to 27 days a month and they deducted overtime payments against the cooperation policy, and now they’ve suspended it completely.
After the introduction of the night train, there were no additional workforce/ staff for that shift. So we had to balance the same number to work in three different shifts both in Nairobi and Mombasa Terminus.
As a result, we have four off days in a month, which are taken together therefore we are entitled to overtime.
The policy says that you’re supposed to get payment of up to extra 40hrs worked multiplied by 2 multiplied by pay rates according to your basic salary.
For example in our case, we are supposed to earn Ksh. 16,000 to Ksh.22,000 overtime every month but payments are always irregular something the entire human resource department cannot explain.
Many are times we get as little as Ksh.2,000 or even none. The management has intimidated us fully to a point that we were transferred without notice and no questions asked.
Transportation of staff from the workplace was also cancelled despite the fact that the afternoon shift ends at 9 pm and 10 pm respectively on both Terminus and the night shift ends at 4 am.
How do they expect women to get home at that time? Can Ksh. 42,000 salary be good enough to take a cab every day? What about if you’re living in places where online taxis do not operate? The company policy categorically states that transport will be provided to anyone working past 7 pm.
