CAPTION: Education Cabinet Secretary George Magoha during the distribution of KCPE exams

A section of teachers who took part in supervising and marking the recently concluded national assessment tests are up in arms against the Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) over the delayed reimbursement of their dues and funds meant to cover supplementary transport costs which they incurred during the tedious assignment.

Speaking to this blog on Thursday, June 2, one of the suffering contractors lamented signing the poorly paying deal whose terms and conditions are reportedly based on old and outdated rates from as long as 20 years ago.

The source additionally reveals that as they tirelessly worked under deplorable conditions on the ground, they handsomely paid KNEC officials who preside over the exercise through allowances which are calculated per kilometre.

By the time we concluded KCPE and KSCE exams in April 2022, some are rumoured to have pocketed hefty amounts running into millions of shillings, which were allegedly wired to various discreet bank accounts.

“Hello, Nyakundi,

Kindly raise the issue of payment of teachers who supervised and also marked KCPE and KCSE examinations, which were done in early March and marking completed by Easter.

They have not reimbursed teachers for the transport they used, yet others had to dig deeper in their pockets as KNEC did not pay them well because of poor transport rates that were set in the early 2000s.

The rates have never changed yet those in government (the ones who go around checking if teachers are invigilating) are paid per kilometre).

Examiners, on the other hand,, have also not received their pay despite stressing conditions during marking.

But teachers still go hoping the money will be paid to offset some extra bills.

Rumour has it that top KNEC officials bank the money in fixed accounts since the profits are so major.

All this is at the expense of teachers.

If one withheld money for over 240,000 teachers contracted by KNEC that runs into very many millions, yet teachers gave their all.

Kindly highlight this because the money has kept getting withheld over the years,” the source writes.
