Ashok Leyland, Tata Motors and Ideal Ceramics: An unholy trinity dangerously polluting the environment

Serious concerns have been raised over prevailing hazardous conditions generated by a string of companies along Mombasa Road.

Through a message sent to this site’s Chief Editor Cyprian Nyakundi, one worried Kenyan has brought to our attention how some of the biggest factories have been spewing raw sewage out in the streets, pausing a great health risk to inhabitants of the industrial zone near Embakasi.

The firms which include Ashok Leyland, Tata Motors and Ideal Ceramics are said to dispose of all of their harmful waste into an overflowing furrow that spans more than 300 metres long and is right next to their gates.

“Hi, Cyprian,

It is saddening to see raw sewage flowing for several months right outside some of the biggest companies here in Kenya – near GM – Mombasa Road.

Health risk and smelling raw sewage overflowing in a mtaro almost for almost 300 metres, right at the gates of Ashok Leyland, Tata Motors & Ideal Ceramics.

Can the management of these 3 companies come together and do something about this?

Or they are waiting for the government to come and clean their doorsteps?

For example, Ideal ceramics prides itself in selling expensive top of the range toilet products – but have smelly raw sewage right at their gate.

Very embarrassing,” our source writes.

Kenyan regulations prohibit any person from discharging any effluent from sewer treatment works, industry or other sources into the environment without a valid effluent discharge license issued by NEMA.

The regulations also outline that wastewater should be treated before it is discharged into a public sewer line.

Many factories in the country (like the ones named above) have been contravening these provisions by either discharging untreated effluent into a public sewer or discharging it into the environment.

According to pundits, this has been a major source of pollution of major rivers in the country, especially the Nairobi River where the untreated effluent finds its way.
