A furious customer has laid strong false advertising charges against Jumia Kenya after the poorly-rated online shopping mall sent him the wrong package.
Speaking out via social media on Sunday, 20th March 2022, the disappointed client explained how he was met by great shock when he received a mobile phone device that was completely different from what he purchased on the platform.
“Cerebral Assasin” as he calls himself on Twitter, revealed that when making his order, he strictly selected a Xiaomi Mi 11T Pro, which was on sale for Sh50,999.
On the contrary, Jumia delivered the Xiaomi Mi 11T, which is a much inferior version of the Chinese device.
In the wake of this broad daylight robbery, the victim immediately contacted their customer care service and informed them of the erroneous dispatch.
To his surprise, agents from Jumia informed him that the retailer holds a strong “no-return” policy once the seal on the item’s box is broken.
This was to falsely intimate that the mistake was not on their end but the customer’s fault.
However, as the victim proceeds to explain, this does not make sense because Jumia themselves advertised the Xiaomi Mi 11T Pro (as well as its full, accurate specifications) on their website.
The change only occurs the moment unsuspecting customers place the item on their cart, after which the device is quickly changed to a Xiaomi Mi 11T.
“Jumia Kenya, Nimelipia Xiaomi Mi 11T pro mkatuma Mi 11T with some old earbuds and some smartwatch.
Na nimewacontact kurudisha mnasema return policy ni Kama box haijafunguliwa innit? You intentionally sent me the wrong device hoping I won’t notice to rob me of my hard-earned money.
So I ordered an 11T Pro, snapdragon but you guys in the order details named it as 11T. How sneaky can you get?
I don’t need some Mediatek device for 50k. I need my money back or you bring me what I ordered.
But when one orders you send the wrong device.
How soon can you collect this and bring me what I ordered?
I’ll explain how this works.
Jumia Kenya advertises an 11T Pro on their website with snapdragon and all the bells and whistles.
Then, when you place it in the cart they change it to an 11T instead of MediaTek.
What kind of sick approach is this?
Probably that way, they can claim you ordered wrongly when you actually didn’t.
This is a case of false advertising. From what I am getting, the 11T pro costs way more so they price it as an 11T to lure unsuspecting consumers then after you buy they tell you you can’t return it,” the angry buyer lamented on his Twitter thread.
With behavioural targeting rapidly growing as a marketing tool, it has become easy to attract consumers using available data to determine exactly which products they would like therefore sending false adverts with these products their way to reel them in.

Because people tend to use their subconscious minds most of the time, many businesses like Jumia have taken this opportunity to use deceptive and misleading techniques to their advantage to attract consumers to such products.
With the internet being loosely regulated in Kenya, many of those who fall victim to such scams by Jumia end up finding it very hard to access justice.

We always advise our readers to conduct proper due diligence when dealing with such shadowy firms.
A quick search on the internet will clearly show you that Jumia has been playing these con games ever since its entry into the Kenyan market in March 2013.
