Kakuma is a refugee town in North Western Kenya in Turkana County.

Police have unearthed a huge exam cheating racket in Kakuma Town, in Turkana West subcounty.

Scores of students were found with mobile phones inside the examination hall during the KCSE exams.

This is a common phenomenon during exams in Kenya, however, the current rampant and bold nature is shocking.

Dr Julia Situma and Dr Misiko Wasike, in their paper titled, ‘The Challenge of Examination Malpractices in
Institutions of Higher Learning in Kenya’, published by the International Journal of academic research in business and social sciences posit that, ‘In Kenya, a lot of value is attached on paper qualification rather than skill development. Even promotions at places of work are based on certificates and this has led to exam malpractices in institutions of higher learning. Poor supervision of examination therefore tempting students to cheat in the examination’.

This is true about exams in Kenya even at the lower levels of education.

Cheating in exams is so ingrained in some quarters such that the 2016 exams clean up that saw top grades fall to record low levels was sneered at by the culprits and some section of the Kenyan populace.

Most parents and some education institutions poured cold water on the crackdown on exam cheating that had been implemented by KNEC chair Prof George Magoha (Now CS education) and Interior CS Dr Fred Matiangi who was the CS then in the Education docket.

There were rumours that the exam results had been guesswork.

Until then, there was a common saying that some top national schools often receive ‘exam leakage’ leading to their continued lead on every exam.
