CAPTION: Retired President Mwai Kibaki: Murmurs have emerged after the former Head of State missed his younger brother’s funeral

Retired President Mwai Kibaki’s younger brother was on Friday laid to rest in a low-key ceremony.

The 93-year-old Mzee Samuel Githinji Kibaki was interred at his Thunguri home in Othaya, Nyeri County.

Although the family did not reveal the cause of death, the funeral was attended by politicians in different levels, including Laikipia Governor Nderiti Muriithi, who is a nephew of the former Head of State, Kibaki’s son Jimmy, Othaya MP Gichuki Mugambi.

Predecessors Mary Wambui and Chinga MCA Kiruga Thuku were also in attendance.

However, the ex-President was missing in action, prompting questions from some Kenyans.

Those concerned wondered what would be happening to the man they consider as the best President Kenya has ever produced.

Kibaki’s last public appearance was in February 2020 when he went to view the body of his predecessor, Daniel Arap Moi. However, when he showed up for the viewing, everybody except his handlers was blocked from accessing Parliament building until he left, raising concerns about his health.

The former Kenyan leader last addressed the public during the burial of former Nyeri Governor Nderitu Gachagua in 2016. Many said his speech was difficult to understand.

Meanwhile, Githinji was eulogized as a humble and kind man.

Almost all speakers acknowledged that despite his elder brother being prominent, he lived a simple life.

In the past, some siblings of Kibaki have come out to reveal that they did not live large even after their brother became President and were content with that.

Kibaki was the lucky one among his three brothers and sisters, as he went to school.

Bernard Nderitu Kibaki, who breathed his last in 2019, died a poor man.

Speaking to media in 2013, Nderitu explained that he was a peasant farmer and was living from hand to mouth all his life, adding that not even a day he asked for financial aid from his blessed brother, who even to access was virtually impossible.
