CAPTION: Roadside Chips Vendor Bevalyn Kwamboka

Roadside chips vendor Bevalyn Kwamboka might soon be forced to say goodbye to her part-time business which recently shot to internet fame.

This became apparent after the Kenya Urban Roads Authority (KURA) on Friday, October 8, sent a warning to the Kenyatta University student explaining why her “Kibanda” located near Donholm area is in contravention of the law.

In the statement shared on Twitter, KURA forewarned that it is illegal to set up businesses in areas that lead to the encroachment of pedestrian spaces, eg; around public footbridges or alongside road reserves.

“This is unauthorised and an infringement to pedestrian rights, the footbridges and walkways are meant for pedestrian passage and not any form of business,” read part of the tweet.

The notice comes barely a day after Kwamboka hit out at nominated Jubilee Senator Millicent Omanga for apparently lying about donating money to her.

The chips vendor made it clear that Senator Omanga only gifted her an umbrella and two aprons, adding that there was no exchange of cash.

In regards to whether or not KURA live up to their threats, the agency has recently heightened its efforts in weeding out all traders encroaching walkways and footbridges within the city.

In June this year, KURA warned traders operating along the recently completed Ngong Road against setting up businesses on road reserves, thereby obstructing pedestrians and motorists.

The alarm was raised following an influx of roadside makeshift shops.
