A TikTok video that captures a man vandalizing a section of the JKIA–Westlands Highway, popularly branded as the Nairobi Expressway has become the latest trending topic on social media.
In the clip which emerged on Saturday, September 2021, the chap can be seen ripping off a section of corrugated fencing sheets before quickly crossing over to the other side of the road.
Some have defined the footage as one that truly captures the current broke and desperate state of ordinary Nairobians as the cost of living continues to skyrocket.
This became quite apparent on Tuesday evening when Kenyans were further pushed to the wall after the government abruptly suspended a fuel subsidy that had been designed to cushion households and motorists from higher fuel prices triggered by a surge in international crude oil price.
The Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA) announced an increase in the price of petrol by KSh 7.58 per litre, diesel by KSh 7.94 per litre, and kerosene by KSh 12.97 per litre.
The latest policy shift that has seen fuel prices jump to an all-time high has also heavily fueled inflation which led to a public uproar over the increased cost of living already worsened by the Covid-19 pandemic.
