Did Anti Narcotics Unit rob important documents belonging to Njenga Karume’s estate?

According to testimonies by the defense team in an ongoing court case, the DCI Anti-Narcotics Unit may have cahooted with powerful individuals and a police informant (at the time) to confiscate important documents belonging to the estates of the late Njenga Karume, late Wariara Karume, and late Matu Kihato -a former Kenya Airforce Captain.

So, what were these documents?

The background of this tussle goes way back to 2016 when some corrupt pay-for-hire media stations published and reported unverified news about the arrest of one of the late Njenga Karume grandsons. Without following media council of Kenya’s protocol, of hearing both sides’ stories first before publishing stories, the media channels reported that the accused and 2 others had been arrested in connection to police intelligence which linked them as organizers of a pornographic party dubbed ‘Project X’.

Furthermore, that categorically the police suspect late Njenga Karume’s grandson as a key player of an international drug trafficking cartel. (However, they are yet to prove the allegations).

According to charge sheet, Njenga Karume’s grandson and two others were arrested with a parcel whose contents are still under contention. The parcel is said to have been shipped from Canada containing cannabis of an estimated $100 value.

Charge Sheet

Following a year and some months of research and investigations, Cnyakundi.com reveals several findings.

Firstly, that reportedly, DCI Dr. Hamisi and a NIS agent were involved in planning the arrest. That the Anti Police Narcotics Unit planted the said drugs to entrap Njenga Karume’s grandson and in the process steal important succession court documents. This cannot be far from truth as of late, the courts have castigated the DCI and police for involvements in numerous sting operations.

A dig up on Dr. Hamisi revealed that together with DPP Haji, they are accused of stealing Ksh 2 million from an accused person. In a previous arrest, where a Mombasa-based businessman was apprehended for money laundering and drug charges, it is alleged that DPP Noordin Haji and Dr Hamisi made away with Ksh 2.1 million out of a total Ksh 20.8 million that they confiscated.

Secondly, that the grandson was arrested with 4 others including a NIS agent. That the four namely Mohamed Ali (Former flatmate), Ferdinand Bukhala (NIS Informant), Jese Bubi (Business partner), and John Musyoka (Friend) were all released and have never been charged before a court of law.

Yet, the court documents indicate that the grandson was arrested jointly with Lawrence Muketo and Joseph Mutua leaving out the four who are neither at large or beyond police areas of jursdiction.

It further emerged to cnyakundi.com that while the arrest of the grandson was occurring, rogue police officers posted at the Anti-Narcotics combed his house and took possession of passports belonging to the late Mukuhi Karume-Kihato and the Late Captain Kihato.

That the motive of the arrest was to steal court succession documents of the contested Njenga Karume’s estate. This is evinced by enquiries from the police about crucial documents for the Re Estate of the Late Wariara Karume case. Additionally, that three vehicles were used during the raid on the grandson’s property, a clear waste of taxpayers’ money.

In 2016, around the same time that Karume’s Grandson got arrested a son of a British aristocrat was arrested with 100kgs of Cocaine worth $4.5 Million. However, he was acquitted in 2019 because of a lack of enough evidence. The court and Anti-Narcotics Unit stated: “Marian, 33, could have had no knowledge that the drugs were stashed in a shipment which was en-route from Brazil to East Africa”

Jack Marrian, 31, the grandson of the sixth Earl Cawdor, was arrested in July after the alleged discovery of 220lbs of cocaine hidden in bags of sugar being shipped from Brazil to Uganda, via the Kenyan port of Mombasa

Back to the ongoing court case, during one of the witness testimonies, it emerged that the Anti-Narcotics Unit found nothing on the accused mobile phones and emails that linked them to Canadian drug connects. Furthermore, that the police are still to return the passports of the late Njenga Karume, the late Captain Matu Kihato, late Jane Mukuhi Karume and court documents for the late Wariara’s (Karumes first wife’s) Estate

Additionally, requests from the accused to summon Mr. Right Vantage and the other 4 people arrested with Karume’s Grandson on July 13, 2016, are still pending. Mr. Right Vantage is said to have sent the contested parcel. Also, that the parcel contained a camping hammock inside and the invoice confirmed so.

During the trial, the accused questioned as to why no written statements from the Canadian post office confirmed that they indeed called a Mr. Stephen Kirimi to notify him about the drugs.

Lastly, on the material day of arrest, Dr. Hamisi came out publicly to state that Njenga Karume’s grandson was found with “Cocaine, Ecstasy, several kilos of High-grade marijuana and LSD.” Yet, the charge sheet reads that he was found with Cannabis worth $100. These contradictory statements poke a hole in the integrity of the whole arrest. More appalling is the fact that police officers who arrested the accused were yet to be officially gazetted as police officers.

Following Citizen TV’s documentary “Guns Galore” anyone can literally be a police officer if they have the money. Furthermore, that only 4 out of the 15 people who raided the houses with guns identified as police. What is even more appalling is that the 4 were gazetted as police officers in 2017 a year after the arrest.

So basically, on July 13, 2016, 15 civilians and a police informant used police cars, police badges and guns to arrest 3 people, steal documents belonging to one of Kenya’s freedom fighters and a former Airforce Officer. They also worked a way that the media would write derogatory stories to divert public attention. What is disenchanting is that they got away with it. The system really needs some fixing up.
