Stephen Jackson, United Nations Resident Coordinator in Kenya

The United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS) is in disarray after blogger Cyprian Nyakundi exposé.

This website exposed racism and slavery at the United Nations Office at Nairobi (UNON) where Thushanti Selvarajah – Head of Programme (HoP), Rainer Frauenfeld – Country Director (CD), Hina Tabassum – HR Manager, Idris Ahmed – Head of Support Services (HoSS) and Kripa Shah – Procurement Manager, were exposed as slave masters.

They are now planning a meeting to address the issues that were raised in the article.

Dear colleagues

You are all aware of an article earlier today which alleges a range of serious misconduct (which includes allegations of racism) in the office.

I recognize how serious these concerns are and that we have work to do in the office to ensure that everyone feels they work in a supportive environment.

Next week, we will organize a meeting where i would like to give you all the opportunity to share your thoughts in an open and supportive environment.

Colleagues from PCG and our Ethics Office have also offered to come and speak with us all to offer their guidance and support.

Slavery & Racism in Kenya at the United Nations Office at Nairobi (UNON)

At UNOPS, we take such allegations seriously. I encourage each of you to send through UNOPS established channels any details that you may have that could allow management to determine whether there has been any improper action through robust and independent investigations. You can rest assured that if we find evidence of misconduct, then corrective/improvement actions will follow.

I am committed to your wellbeing and the wider principles of equality that come as part of the United Nations

I hope I can call on your support so that we can work together to address our challenges and become a stronger team.

Thank you for your attention, stay safe and have a good weekend.

Rainer
