The Use and Dump Power-games of Coast Tycoons

There is this theatrics of Coast tycoons-most who have amassed Billions by creating a privatised monopoly.

The powerful and corrupt Coast tycoons have a habit of using and dumping politicians and their power games are mainly displayed during the electioneering period.

A keen watcher will notice them and their cartels especially when Uhuru or Raila visits Coast.

Notable political onlookers will notice that while this was the same with DP Ruto in the past, since BBI was crafted through the system, most of the cartel tycoons and politicians have dumped the Hustler.

While a visibly tired Raila hawks BBI and Uhuru confused about his future after power, Ruto is busy brainwashing unemployed mass with his wheelbarrownomics. Behind all these, powerfull cartels are bankrolling their fates.

These coast tycoons are known to have deep pockets as most of them have hijacked and monopolised the importation of commodities, oil, electronics…

To spread their risks, the cartels finance presidential campaigns to support candidates they deem likely to win the Presidency.

The Coast tycoons are good at hedging their bets by funding both the likely winner of the presidential race and the rivals just in case to protect their interests. In one of their fundraising missions for Uhuru and Ruto ahead of the 2017 general election they raised at least Sh1 billion in an exclusive invite-only dinner,” a source close to power brokers said.

Mombasa tycoons are known to offer campaign donations and then after elections start demanding for contracts and other favours from those elected.

Although at times the tycoons are seen as fighting each other over lucrative business deals from the government, they end up agreeing on how to use their leverage to benefit all of them.

The political machinations and supremacy wars between Coast tycoons and their political acolytes are going to pan out as political re-alignments among major political formations continue to shape up ahead of the 2022 general election.

At the centre to deploy and display political balls, there is a group aligned to Abubakar Joho who is the elder brother of the low budget sultan Hassan Joho.

Another group is controlled by Grain Bulk Handlers Ltd owner cartel Mohamed Jaffer.

During the KANU dictatorship era of the late Daniel Arap Moi, cartels who made their word to be law from Mombasa, Kwale, Kilifi, Tana River, Lamu and Taita Taveta, were the people to go to if you wanted a political office, public land, government house, jobs or government tenders.

At the time, their boss was a sugar baron Rashid Sajjad of then Bawazir Maize Millers and Milly Glass Works.

During Moi days, Sajjad’s circle had Mohammed Bawazir, the owner of Nawal Centre Mohammed Zubedi, a known transporter OM Bayusuf, the late Tahir Sheikh Said (TSS), convicted drug baron Ibrahim Akasha, Shadid Butt of Modern Coast, Mohamed Jaffer (GBHL), Alnoor Jiwan of Alba Petroleum, Shipping cartel Edwin Yinda, Now Mvita MP Shariff Nasir, Said Hemed now Kisauni MP, Said Kajembe and Ahmed Mwidani.

When Mwai Kibaki came to power after the 2002 general election, a new group of power brokers emerged under alleged druglord Ali Punjani.

Ali Punjani’s circle has Abu Joho, a new sugar baron called Twalib Hayatan of Mat International, Kosla (Coast Hauliers), Mohamed Islam of Mombasa Maize Millers, Karisa Maitha the famous Kisauni MP, Suleiman Shakombo (Likoni MP) among others.

With the handshake in play, Abu is now the Coast kingmaker where, under AGIP, he controls political developments from the counties of Mombasa, Kilifi, Taita-Taveta and Tana River.

In Jaffer’s corner are politicians and businessmen who don’t-see-eye-to-eye with the Johos.

These political bad blood brewed after Jaffer befriended a former Kenya Port Authority CEO Brown Ondego and elevated him to the Board of Directors of his GBHL business.

Ondego awarded and transferred all key KPA operations to Jaffer’s firms. Ondego was close to former Vice President and former Deputy Prime Minister and currently ANC Party Leader Musalia Mudavadi.

The ANC party leader has a vast interest in the Exports and Imports and runs a vast empire in the KPA’s clearing and forwading operations. Is Mudavadi also bankrolled by Jaffer Mohamed?

The use and dump power games have left a permanent enmity between Islam, Hayatan, Hezron Awiti, Brown Ondego, Nyali MP Ali Mohamed, Omar Hassan, Tourism CS Najib Balala, Aisha Jumwa, Kwale Governor Salim Mvurya and Lamu governor Fahim Twaha, all Jaffer’s partners.

Those on Abu Joho’s side include Zubedi, Hasu Patel the Owner of Mombasa Cement, Kilifi Governor Amason Kingi, Mvita MP Abdulswamad Sheriff, Mombasa governor and ODM deputy party leader Hassan Joho all Punjani’s partners.

Although some of the tycoons benefitted immensely from DP Ruto, most of them are now avoiding him fearing reprisals from the government. They only want to be seen with Uhuru or Raila,” a source said.

The 70-year-old tycoon Jaffer Mohamed has over the years gained notoriety for using cash to entice his victims with easily available cash.

Jaffer has also developed a ruthless reputation for his use and dump tactics among the political class.

Before DP Ruto, Jaffer was closely associated with the then Prime Minister Raila Odinga whose campaigns he heavily bankrolled in 2007.

Before he welcomed Matiangi as his inside man in government, Jaffer was known to be cosy with Deputy President William Ruto who has guarded Jaffers businesses interests since Jubilee first came to office.

With both Raila and Uhuru in a dilemma about their 2022 plans, Jaffer dumping DP Ruto for Matiangi signals that the Interior CS could be the man to watch in 2022.

What is worrying is the tactics this Mombasa cartel tycoons use to eliminate threats against their dark dealings.

While many brag of a long road to success, these tycoons have created a private Monopoly by befriending and later dumping so many individuals who enjoyed the proximity to State power.
