CAPTION: President Uhuru Kenyatta

Kenya’s President Uhuru Kenyatta is expected to take a break from the office in the coming days, latest reports now say.

According to information circulating on social media, diplomats based in Nairobi have today been notified of President Uhuru’s incoming absence from duty over reasons yet to be immediately established, but suspected to be a breather ahead of the festive season.

In their statement, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Nairobi today declared that the Head of State is set to take a one-month leave from 15th December 2020 to 15th January 2021.

The news shared by among others, top Standard Digital journalist Mosoku Geoffrey on his Facebook page, has drawn mixed reactions from netizens, with some viewing it as a much-needed break for Uhuru who is approaching his 8th year in power, whilst some were left unconvinced that he deserves one.

Here is what some of them had to say…

Does this mean Uhuru will leave power?

Not really…

According to the Kenyan constitution, a vacancy in the office of the President can only occur if;

  1. He dies
  2.  Resigns, in writing, addressed to the Speaker of the National Assembly; or
  3.  Otherwise ceases to hold office under Article 144 or 145 or under any other provision of this Constitution.
