The Standard Group’s half-year profits declined by 85 per cent to KSh19 million from KSh126 million, as reported in August, marking a business that is clearly on its death bed unless something radical is done.
Though the decline in profits is attributable to increased investment costs and a drop in advertising, the later being made worse by Covid-19, there is also the issue of bad management.
The bad business management style of Orlando Lyomu where unqualified staff are hired and then left to their own devices has really hurt firm.
It doesn’t help that Standard Group is now attracting lawsuits every now and then. The writers write stories from rumours which is, in turn, attracting lawsuits against the firm, eating into the company’s money in legal costs.
Orlando Lyomu is a marked man courtesy of the losses and bad management.
Sued Standard
Recently, a story appearing on the Standard about businessman Mohamed Jaffer and SGR land compensation has made the Mombasa-based businessman has sued the Standard. The businessman says he was maliciously linked with fabrications, that are the order of the day at the once leading media group. Legal analysts have predicted fireworks and high losing chances by standard media group.
In 2019, Standard Group was forced to delete a story about Ronnie Osumba’s Bankruptcy, where they alleged that the former running mate to Peter Kenneth was about to be auctioned for Sh10 million house in Athi River.
In December 2019, Nominated Senator Agnes Zani was awarded Sh6 million in suit against the firm. The ODM senator had filed a case of defamation citing an article published by the Standard Group on March 9, 2014, under a headline “Revealed: The inside story of ODM’s Men in Black.”
The article talked of organized chaos and spoke of three senior party officials from Nairobi who had met two days before the ODM elections and assembled an army of 100 youths to disrupt voting and prevent the Hassan Joho-Ababu Namwamba team from taking over leadership.
In the first quarter of 2020, there was the case of bad-mouthing the Standard Gauge Railways managers the Afristar. Luckily, they seem to have gotten the contract and escaped another lawsuit.
