Education CS Prof. George Magoha has directed the Vice Chancellors and Principals of Universities to explore plans for reopening their institutions.
Universities have also been directed to consider preventive mechanisms in their plans to curb the spread of covid-19 as they reopen in September.
The directives were a relief to over 100,000 students who sat the 2019 KCSE exam and qualified to join university in the said month.
In the directive, Magoha wants all learning institutions that are currently being used as quarantine centres to liaise with the Health ministry and prepare for transfer of patients to other facilities that will be identified.
“After the patients are transferred, you must ensure the facilities used during treatment are properly fumigated for safe use in line with the guidelines from the Ministry of Health.” Magoha said
Hi statemented further directed all universities to plan on helping students who might need assistance to get back to their institution.
“Make sure that students and staff who might not be able to get back are facilitated to continue with teaching and learning remotely,” his statement reads.
The minimum requirements set be met upon reopening have been outlined as clean running water and sanitizer or soap for hand washing.
Universities will also be required to frequently sanitize touched objects as door knobs, light switches and stair railings with disinfectants.
Lecture hall and common place will have to adhere to social distancing rule by putting signs to students and staff.
Limited interactive programmes will also be encouraged.
Use of masks or face shields for learners, lecturers and non-teaching staff also remain mandatory.
And they must have thermal guns for monitoring the temperatures of the entire population in the univarsities and people entering the intuitions and specific public spaces on campus.
